Howdy Sonny, as you probably have heard several times already, Welcome to Wikitree. I am an Alexander descendant also. My particular line, of the seven brothers/two sisters fame, got to Maryland in the 1600s, split off and moved to North Carolina in th e1700s, and after several generations, great great grandpa Alexander took his family and came to Texas in the mid 1800s. If I can be of help with your line, let me know.
As to your question, it is a bit generalized to give a specific answer. you have already gotten some "no" answers so I'll be positive and give you a "yes" answer; but with conditions. As to Wikitree organization itself, it is basically a platform or framework that was organized to facilitate a one-world-tree concept. Its been tried elsewhere, but with much less success in my opinion. As a framework, it is harder to learn than other sites, such as Ancestry, but that is actually one of Wikitree's strengths. As a single tree connecting everyone, the emphasis in on accuracy of sources to support the data given in a profile. Since the organization of the site itself does not offer genealogical sources or references itself, it is up to the user to supply sources themselves, and list them on profiles in a way that others can find and check the sources also.
That being said, collaboration on sourcing profiles is also a primary goal. The members/volunteers of Wikitree are generally willing to help and guide each other through creating and sourcing the profiles. There will, at times, be other members working on some of the same lines or profiles that you are, and by working together, a better and more solid base can be created for a given person's profile. Therefore, Wikitree (the members) are doing research all the time, and upon occasion, their studies will assist you in your work, and vice versa.
Learning the framework and guidelines of making Wikitree work will be the hardest part. Its not hard to start, but once you have entered a few profiles, you need to learn sourcing and how to enter them onto a profile. Learning the coding and formats can seem daunting, but it will become second nature in no time. I've only been on Wikitree for a little over two years, and I have much to learn, like using projects and boxes asnd such. But that's not necessary for me at the moment. Getting names and dates correct to the best of my ability is my main goal, as I too enter mine profile by profile, not using a gedcom.
I could go on and on, I love genealogy, history and Wikitree. But do not give up if it seems a bit of an uphill climb. You have already found the forums, which is a good place to get help on both how to make Wikitree work and family trees. Sometimes ruff and gruff, but we are working together.
Shoot me message if you would like to talk Alexanders, or anything Wikitree for which you would like an old geezers perspective. Cheers!
