Privacy setting "Private" for mid-19th century profiles?

I recently came about several profiles of early to mid 1800's people set to private (red). I can understand private with public biography and family tree, or may be even just private with public biography, but doesn't it defeat the purpose of a collaborative tree when profiles from the early 1800's are private?

You might try contacting the profile manager of said profile and request that they could set the privacy status to a different color and tell them why you are interested in knowing.  It may be that they have living relatives that the manager would like to keep private.

As I'm cleaning up and sourcing my original profiles, I have run into a few that are private that shouldn't be and I think it's because I did not put in a death date at creation or checked any of the choices in later edit.  I think that set it to private originally and unintentionally so I'm guessing that has happened to others.  :-)

i agree with you.  It can and does happen.   cheeky

You can also let a team member know and we can take a look and see if the privacy settings need to be addressed with the profile manager(s).  :)

of course.   yes

I think the website should prevent GEDCOMs being uploaded enabling people to create profiles with the "green" setting for those individuals 200yrs+.  I have a few mergers that I would like to complete for medieval profiles that should be "white" but unresponsive owners have allocated "green".    Is there a way to do this?

For the merge itself, you just have to be patient and wait 30 days; if the profile manager doesn't approve, postpone, or reject the merge during that time, it's assumed that the profile manager doesn't object to the merge, and you'll be able to complete it.

For making other changes: On the bottom right of the profile page, there's a set of links that includes "open profile request" on certain records; you can use that to request that the profiles be opened.  You can also email the WikiTree info email address to request it.
