In addition to being fired upon by the British War Ship Serapis, Jones was fired upon the full length of his deck by his own squadron ship USS Alliance which during the battle may have caused more damage to Jones ship then the British War Ship. Captain Pierre Landais of the Alliance was a long time competitor and foe of Jones. Landais had on several occasions challenged Jones to a duel . (Which wasn't allowed during that period of time in the US Navy.) Landais later was reprimanded for the "mistake" of which he never apologized for , ( The Gentleman's Way of the period.) which added fuel and fact to his desire to see Jones dead. ..... The "famous" Jone's "quote "I have not yet begun to Fight!" was an answer to his own officer and sergeant who had just surrendered to the British thinking Jones was dead. Jones was injured and yet he commanded a cannon , pointed at his officer and sergeant and made the famous reply. At about the same time a marine hanging from the main yard tossed a hand grenade into the hatch of the British ship and an explosion with such devastation that The British immediately surrendered.
Jone's ship was originally French made .. C'est Bon Magnifique !
