I see he registered for the Civil War Draft Registration: a farmer, age 20, unmarried in Amherst, Maine.  I do not find any record of service.

Write National Archives,They may have Service Record.

There are 51 Rankin or Rankins who served in the Union for Maine

None by that name from Maine who served in the Confederacy.

I searched both Soldiers and Sailors.

I searched for soldiers in the Civil War. He was not a soldier in the Civil War,for sure.
