Just a bit of brain storming after I saw the 1860 census without any guarantee that I am on the correct path....

Is it possible Daniel lived for a bit of time in Illinois? His wife was born there according to the 1860 census. Yes, there he is said to be born in New York and not in Massachusetts, but considering those are neighbor states this could be an error if the Salisbury family gave the information. Also AFAIK (I'm no American) many people who went from coast to coast stopped somewhere in between before continuing their way westward.
