This family contains duplicate, some wrong, information - can you fix?

There are many duplicate and conflicting entries in the Douglas-391 family's entries.  It seems some loving care and attention is required if it is to come up to an acceptable standard.

Comments have already been made on some of the pages, but no action apears to have been taken.

I just did some major editing to  the profile and unbeknownst to me others were editing it at the same time. I don't know about them but some of my edits have completely disappeared - no trace of the changes at all. Not nice!
I am afraid I do not understand what Douglas 391 means.  I am new to this site and still trying to figure it out.  My line is to the Douglas and I have traced it back to my great - great - great grandfather.  I have entered infomration on ancestry.com but I don't think I have entered anything on WikiTree as I don't know how.  My information is pretty solid and if I did by accident enter something - I am so sorry.  I don't know where to go to look but I will look around the site to see if I can figure it out.  Sherri
Sherri, this g2g post was two years ago.  Looks like the profile has subsequently been cleaned up. It's fine to add information to profiles as long as you include your sources for your information. But with profiles like this one-- some call them deep ancestors -- shared by so many descendants and in this case part of historical aristocracy, you should discuss changes with the profile manager(s) before making any changes.
I think I added my sources for my grandfather in a previous comment (William Douglas).  I added all of the information in ancestry.com.  As I said I have actual copies of newspaper obits and my family owned the mortuary in Greensburg, IN and the grave sites at one time.  I am pretty certain that my grandfather's information is solid but my great grandfather I am still trying to nail down (another William Douglas).  I think I know and will probably have it nailed by next week.  It is there I just need to get copies of the documents.  Sorry If I caused any confusion.  Being a novice - and not familiar with the site may have caused this.  Again my apologies.  Sherri
I'm a tad confused; the profile linked to in this g2g thread is from 1327-- MANY more generations back from your grandfather and great-grandfather. Which profile(s) are you referring to, Sherri?
Actually I am searching for the parent of my great grand father.  A William Douglas who may have been born in 1806.  I am not sure of the date - just guessing from a census report.  I haven't gotten back to the 1300's yet.  So I guess I am confused too.  Sorry to have created so much controversary over the William Douglass' of my family.  After searching on the Douglas Clan site - there are so many William Donglass' that I am surprised anyone figures out anything.

Thank you for your interest in the WikiTree project and for your comments here.

The ongoing problem of duplicates on the WikiTree is one that the sysops, supervisors and arborists work on every day, and the profile you point out is no exception. All profiles here are works-in-process.  Pruning the duplicates is a job that will continue far into the future.

Why?  Because WikiTree is a place where people can share their existing work and knowledge (including flawed work and unsourced entries) as that is the way it must be in order to function as a true Wiki effort - as a truly collaborative world-wide family tree.

Douglas-391, the referrenced profile, needs some pruning and this will be done.  In the mean-time a new member of WikiTree may come along, and with all good intentions, upload another GEDCOM containing not only William, but all of those connected to him: parents, siblings, spouses, children.  Though the process is managed to reduce these incidents, they cannot be entirely avoided without implementing far more rigorous (meaning = harsh or demanding) controls than a Wiki effort would want to contain.

Thus, while your concern is legitimate and appreciated, the solution to the problem is, (and for the forseeable future will continue to be) more volunteer help, particularly in the Arborist role.  Please contact Phillip Smith at the Arborist Project should you feel you could help that effort.

I hope this helps,

Keith
