This is a post for us to communicate with each other before and during the big event this weekend. Are you ready for it?

This G2G question and answer thread  is our team's place to ask questions, give advice, see updates and cheer each other on.

This is my first time volunteering to help as a Team Leader, so any help that I can get from you is very much appreciated.   Any suggestions that you have for helping our team be successful in this Source-A-Thon are welcome!

Hello Team Tennessee participants!

Just setting up a thread where we can coordinate our efforts.

Since this is my first Source-a-Thon, I may need your help with tips and tricks on how to coordinate our work.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE 

This year it's easier than ever to join in the fun. Here's a handy 'how to' video to help you out 

You can use any profiles from the Unsourced profiles categories, as well as a couple specific Data Doctor suggestions lists. For us these are Unsourced Tennessee Profiles, here are all DBE Unsourced Tennessee profiles.

1. Choose a profile.

2. Add a good source. For more information on sources, see our Sources help page

3. Remove the {{Unsourced}} template or [[Category:Unsourced Profiles]]
categorization, if there are any.

4. Click the "Challenge Tracker" button at the very top of the page and choose the "Source-a-Thon" option.  

Move on to the next profile!

HANGOUTS AND PRIZES

The $5700+ in door prizes will be given away in Google Hangout video chats we're hosting every X hours. Here's the schedule

We'll announce winners there as well as post them in G2G here

If your bib number is drawn, you need to claim your prize by responding in the G2G post. You only have until the next Hangout to claim your prize.

The winner has to be participating during the time period in which the their number is drawn. If your number is drawn when you're not online, your number will go "back in the hat" and you'll be eligible for future drawings.

SHARE ON FACEBOOK

If you're a Facebook member, please tell your friends and family what
you're doing this weekend. This helps spread the word about WikiTree.
You might want to post with your "race bib" number, like this:
1.) Right-click the URL for your number above to go to it. Right-click
on the image and select "Save image as...".
2.) Make a mental note on where the image is being saved, e.g. to a
Downloads or My Pictures folder on your computer.
3.) Go to Facebook.
4.) At the top of the status/sharing box click the "Photo/Video" link
and select "Upload Photos/Videos".
5.) Find the image where you saved it.
6.) Add text like "My weekend: Participating in the Source-a-Thon, the
first-ever genealogy sourcing marathon at WikiTree.

Hi Everyone and thanks Linda great job !

I will add this here so you all can see how the Challenge tracker and everything works, it's part of what Chris added to his explanation, and we added some images to it, to make things more visible. and this way you won't have to click around as much. 

Participation will be very easy this year. Last year everybody had to maintain their own counts. Now we have the Challenge Tracker.

You might have already noticed the button that appears after saving a profile. Just click it and select the Source-a-Thon checkbox. Data Doctor Aleš does the rest. He's maintaining the counts on his WikiTree+ server and will enable us to see live statistics and leaderboards throughout the weekend.

The only hard part is the fun part, the genealogical sleuthing.

For the record, here's an example of participation steps you can try:

1. Select a profile from the (for us) DBE Unsourced Tennessee Profiles or the Unsourced Tennessee category.
2. On the profile's pull-down menu select "Research."
3. Select where to search.For example FamilySearch.
4. If you find a source, record it on the profile, copy FamilySearch's handy "Citing this Record" citation and paste it into a set of <ref></ref> tags.
5. Remove the {{Unsourced}} Research Note Box and save the changes, if there's just the {{Unsourced}} or {{Unsourced|Tennessee}} template it would be nice and very helpful if instead of leaving no template at all, you all could replace the {{Unsourced}} or {{Unsourced|Tennessee}} if it is appropriate and if there's no other template or Project covering the profile by the Tennessee Project template {{US History|sub-project=Tennessee}} . 
6. After saving, click the Challenge Tracker button and record the point.
7. Return to step one and repeat until eyes glaze over.

In short...after adding a source to a profile and saving you will notice this field click Challenge tracker

It Takes you to this field, select Source-a-Thon (it will be there during the Source-a-Thon) and when done click add action..that's all :)

I’m Linda B. from California. I’ve been doing genealogical research since 1989. This is my second Source-a-Thon.

I have lots of ancestors who were from Tennessee in the 1700’s and 1800’s - Baker, Overall, Vanover, Bandy, Holland, Spencer, Blythe, Ellison, Crook, Beshears, Scags, Martin, Day, Haynes, Holloway, Buttry, Graves...  I’ve never been there, but hope to get there one of these days. Now that I’m retired (3 months) maybe I’ll have a better chance of getting back there.

Hello Team!  In my sourcing I have come across a person who I have sourced as being on the Mayflower.  Her profile states to let the Mayflower researchers know if anyone has a source.  Not sure how to let them know.  She is Drury-1 in Wikitree.  Thank you for your help.

If profiles are falling under or Project Protected by a different project the safest thing is to add the source in a post and let the project members/profile managers handle it , after adding the source in a post you can remove the Unsourced template., save and update the status just like you would normally..in the update status field/note you can say PPP Profile added source in post ..or something and add action..this way it still counts and no one will be upset ;)

Hello!

Thank you for having me!  This is my first Source-a-Thon and I'm completely excited to participate!  I live in the Seattle area with my husband and teenage daughter.  Several of my ancestors were born in Tennessee and I'm happy to represent them!

When I'm not parenting, dreaming of vacation, or (as my husband says) "genealogizing," I work in oncology, improving patient experiences.

I am back again!  Last year I was randomly assigned to Team Tennessee, and had a total blast working with Summer, helping out with some of the counts during the hangouts when she was otherwise occupied. I sourced not one single Tennessee profile on Team Tennessee last year, but did source a lot of Swedes.  Looking forward to hanging out with folks again this year!

I started sourcing at midnight last night and have done about 50 unsourced profiles. I'm logged in. I'm a team member. I'm clicking the challenge tracker button. I'm clicking the checkbox for the source-a-thon and get the little confirmation box that shows an action has been taken to the profile but I'm nowhere to be seen in the Tracker.Anyone else?

EVERYONE YOU ONLY SUPPOSE TO ADD SOURCES TO THE PROFILES AND NOTHING ELSE. THAT IS WHY THIS IS CALLED SOURCE A THON!

Sources are just the main focus of this particular "Thon" on WikiTree.  Everyone should feel free to improve profiles in all ways as usual, even if you only started looking at that profile this weekend to add sources.  Just make sure you add at least one source, too, if you can!

Yes that's true, and perhaps it both is, to win the Source-a-Thon people perhaps will just ignore the Gedcom or other rubish, issues that need to be solved and everything else, and just add a source and move on to the next and leave the cleaning up, solving issues or adding info from the sources for later or others, but well, many of us also feel we are having a Source-a-Thon to improve the overall health of our shared Family Tree, so a lot of us will clean up and go the little extra mile, to really improve the profile and ..that's of course a great thing and also ok. Slower perhaps, but for sure not wrong ;)

Hey all:

I have been a little slow out of the gate for my first source a thon, but got a few done! Hope to do better through the weekend.

QUESTION: I noted a comment on one of the profiles that findagrave is not an approved source. Since when? I realize it is a secondary source and not to be considered 100% reliable, but if all the data matches profile data and it includes a picture of headstone, I would think it was a "real" source.

I am finally on I had company from 8:00 last night which was my sister, brother and sister in law. My sister in law and brother when there is a home came for University of Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday the planning to come down to visit with my dad which is in about mid stage of Demetia which my dad has vascular demetia which will be about Stage 5 or 6 which there are 7 stages and he has very few good days anymore. He getting very unhappy with the switch of days and time that he had for kidney dialysis he was during in Lenoir City, Tennessee and so we are going to try one in Sweetwater, Tennessee. Also fell Monday out in the yard and we are having problems getting him up out of chairs now. He is 85 years old. So my brother in law and sister are talking we a group of builders of house near where the live in Greeneville, TN to see if they could build my parents a house that they want and then I will live in my sisters old house on their 10 acre lot. There is a kidney dialysis clinic near their house and near where they are hoping for my parents house that they will get built. So all of them left as of 4:30. Sometime later tonight I have a second cousin and his live in girlfriend from Florida is coming by for a visit tonight. So I am in until the come and leave then I will be back. Sorry I so late in getting in.

I am in for Sunday till about 11;00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m. on Monday and I will finish up on Monday at 11:00 p.m..

Don't worry about that Linda, real life always comes first and we all understand you can't split yourself in half. Hope all will go fine and your parents will have a nice house soon ! :)

Thanks teammates and Bea for stepping in for me on Friday night until about when I stepped in I appreciated very much real life does through you curveballs and give you also surprises too. I knew that my brother and sister in law was coming back like the will every weekend that the Tennessee Volunteers football season. They have season tickets for the home games so the will be down here to see my dad because of his problems until we move. But my sister on Thursday night called and said she was coming down to spend the night so she didn't leave until 4:30 p.m. and I didn't know about my second cousin coming because I was walking yesterday morning with my sister in law and when we got back mom told me they called and was coming by for a visit so they didn't get here until 6:30p.m. and didn't leave until 8:30 p.m. So that was a surprise also. How am I doing as a leader with all this interpreations.

I am back for the duration of the source a thon except from 8:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m on Monday but I will finish up at 11:00 pm. on Monday night. GO TEAM TENNESSEE.

How have I done as a fearless leader for Team Tennessee Source a thon for the first time.

Also I have noticed that all of my team member are not participating yet.

Have a great day and you are doing great girl, I know how scary it can be to step up and lead a huge and major event like this, and you just went ahead, dived into this major new and perhaps a bit scary adventure and made sure there would be a Team Tennessee so Linda you showed a lot of courage and....

I have split them up for you at the team page, because we used the # to number the member list, you can just split them up by moving one half of the team a bit down and add a new content (===Team II===) between the now two teams (I already did, but just so you know how it works also) and added the links for the score tracking team & member for this Source-a-Thon to the G2G also (they were already added to the team page)

I'm getting a super late start at this, I was camping with no internet until last night.  I've added sources to 5 profiles, and used the challenge tracker after making the change, but I'm not showing up in the Team Tennessee listing.  I'm not showing up at all.  Any suggestions?  Here are my changes so far:
