It depends so much on the circumstances. I have come across a couple of cases where a childless couple adopted one of the children from a sister's or a brother's flock, in order to have someone to take over the land rights.

Are you asking about William, or one of William's children?  What is the name of the person who was adopted by the Tucker family?  What are the names of TUCKER husband & wife?  Does the adopted person appear on any census with the Tucker family?
