Is anyone familiar with Estonian history?

Thanks to database error report I stumbled upon the profile of Lindgren-74 today (whom I thought was Swedish). Some research gave me the conclusion that he was living in what today is Estonia.

According to Swedish Wikipedia Stora Rågö, where the family lived, was bought by five Swedish farmers in 1345. There has been Swedes living there for 600 years, until WW2 it seems. I know very little of this area and "estlandssvenskar" (Estonian Swedes) and wonder if anyone is better suited to help me figure out what country should be added to their location of birth and death.

Is there perhaps a project about Estonian Swedes?

That's about the same info I got from Swedish Wikipedia. Do you have any  suggestion? Are you familiar with the Estonian Swedes? Would Russia be correct??

WW II pretty much meant the end of 'rannarootslased'.

Today's Estonia was entirely part of the Russian Empire from 1710-1918. On a political map he was born in Imperial Russia while if you read the Wikipedia article, you'll notice 'According to the 1934 Estonian census, the islands had 354 inhabitants, all of them Swedes except for 13 Germans.'

There is an Estonian History Museum. You may want to contact them to inquire about your question and interests.

The mediaeval Great Guild Hall has always played an important role in the life of the city. The permanent exhibition at the History Museum "SPIRIT OF SURVIVAL. 11,000 years of Estonian History" (opened in 2011) helps to understand the singularity ...

Interesting question: In the time in question it was Russian, part of Estland, and populated by Swedes. Which language to use? I would think Swedish since that was spoken there:

  • Stora Rågö, Guvernementet Estland, Kejsardömet Ryssland
  • Suur-Pakri, Eestimaa kubermang, Venemaa Keisririik

Tricky question. I have been to Estonia a couple of times and also had visits from Estonian here in Sweden (through my work as a teacher) and they are a proud people. I love them!! Country of birth ... For  the time of Thomas birth it should be Russia. Helmut has given a great suggestion. Should Harju (the county) be added?
