Does any one know what sort of institution Green Bank, East St George Middlesex was in the 1841 census? I am researching Sarah Addams. From the original document I think her father is a Thames? Policeman. Many other families are living there. Could this just be the way large buildings with many families were recorded in the census? Or is it a debtors prison or workhouse etc?

I thought that it would have been unusual to have the whole family listed together on a workhouse census unless they were employed there, normally the men and women were separated . I looked them up on Ancestry where as luck would have it the family name is mistranscribed as Andrews

Same reference Class: HO107; Piece: 696; Book: 3; Civil Parish: St George Middlesex; County: Middlesex; Enumeration District: 5; Folio: 11; Page: 15

It isn't an institution.   Greenbank is the name of a road, described in the schedule, as

'The North side of Greenbank from [Aucher?] and Hope Alley to Old Gravel Lane' and the South side of Greenbank, from Queen's Head Alley to Old Gravel, Lane'

John is described as a [sorry, illegible to me] Police.  His next door neighbours include labourers, lightermen and watermen.

Here's Greenbank on an 1898 map http://maps.nls.uk/view/101201661

oops, Martin has already answered with much the same

Never mind. :-)

I traced it on Ancestry by the census reference numbers, since I couldn't find the name.

I'm pretty sure it says Thames policeman. There was a river police force and the place fits.
I think you are right and it makes sense.  It's also just dawned on me that it would be  Anchor and Hope Alley (undoubtedly a pub name like the Queen's Head)

Apparently 62 Anchor and Hope Alley was a beerseller's.  There was another Anchor and Hope pub in Watney Street

If it is a household than it can't be a workhouse. They listed males and females separately.

I've finally found it on Ancestry. That family Addams are all together in one dwelling (no-one else). Green Bank is a street name, since enumerator's description includes "North side Green Bank"

There is no mention of an institution.
