If they are certainly duplicates, shouldn't the merge proceed and discrepancies be notated in the merged bio? [closed]

A new user unwittingly made duplicates of an entire family. I proposed merges and most of the family has already been merged... some are unresponsive managers and will be auto approved after 30 days. But this particular profile keeps being set as an "Unmerged Match" due to a difference of 4 years in the DOB... Everything else is matched up exactly, including the place and date of death. I have asked that the merge go forward and the discrepancy in birth dates be noted in the Bio, but the response was "Unmerged Match, DOB's different and don't know which is correct." So how do we proceed from here?

Merge

Maybe you could add a Mentor and a MIR tag to the question!

Just a suggestion, it might help to clean Bio and place a note within the Bio Section of correct info such as

Name; Parents; Birth date/place; Marriage/spouse/etc.Death Date

Might be less confusing with visual aid to tell what is correct and what is not and why.

That's exactly what should happen -- there's no source for either one, so note both in the merged bio pending further research.  Perhaps if she heard it from a Mentor?

The merge should definitely be approved. But, before proceeding with the merge, ideally the person doing the merge would research the DOB so that he/she could resolve the discrepancy in the merged profile. I'm not sure if better sources are available, but "The McClung Genealogy" says that she was born on June 18, 1760 https://books.google.com/books?id=xCo3AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA131&lpg=PA131&dq=%22margaret+martin%22+%22charles+mcclung%22&source=bl&ots=hMr95ZrloU&sig=3ffrXxQJ55ZC2IfmYMoVVJS4uss&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiNr_3J1vjKAhVCzz4KHYcuBmI4ChDoAQgbMAA#v=onepage&q=%22margaret%20martin%22%20%22charles%20mcclung%22&f=false

Find-a-Grave Memorial #[http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=119890992 119890992] also says June 18,1760. But her father's, [[Martin-4423|William Martin Sr.]] has her date of birth listed in the Bio as Jan 19, 1756.
The Find a Grave memorial includes a photo of the tombstone and THAT has the June 18, 1760 date which is probably more reliable than something written in the text section of the Find a Grave page.  I realize this is still not a primary source for birth, but the fact that the only sources that have been found all agree seems to make a strong enough case.

On the other hand, is there any source cited for the date of birth on the other profile?  If not, then I would say to use the one that is sourced and also include a note about the other date in the bio.  If you want to bend over backwards to accommodate the other manager, you could also check uncertain for birth date.

I agree with Chase - this is not sufficient to delay the merge.
And I agree with Gaile.
Were there two people by the same name -- one born in 1756 who supposedly died young then another in 1760 named after the deceased sibling? Research the 1756 date.
Agree - to often "unmerged matches" vs discrepancy notations.  Often the "unmerged matches" people are not attempting to review the information to determine why there is a discrepancy.  On some of the "older" profiles I have seen source to source discrepancies.  If these are not noted, it takes a long time to find.
