GEDcompare for posting my tree: Can I upload my GEDCOM from FamilyTreeMaker? That program would eliminate all the picky manual adjustments that are being described here, like paring down to just ancestors.

You can use any source you like to export a GEDCOM and then upload it here.

Regardless of the source, you are encouraged to export and upload only a small subset at a time (personally, I think the sweet spot is around 100–150 people). Some programs make this easier than others.

The upload process helps you avoid a lot of tedious re-typing and helps create links between existing profiles and ones you want to add, but you still have to manually review whether there is a match for each person, then add each person one at a time, then go back and clean up each profile one at at time (because the upload doesn't do a great job at extracting info from a database and trying to turn it into a narrative). There is no automatic import.

I also work off-line. When I have finished researching a family or four, I tag each person. This allows me to select those persons and create a gedcom file to upload to WT. I try to keep it at less than 100. The upload saves a lot of typing and usually links all the relationships together except when a match was found.

My process has been fine tuned so the upload matches the WT requirements as best as the software will allow. This means that the edit and formatting that is required is minimal.

You should always review the list after you have finished for errors. You will always find things missed. IMO.
