Why is Paris so hard to get records from? Anyone have any new ideas?

Because Paris' townhall burned in 1871 and all records from pre-1860 were lost in the fire. Some of them were able to be recreated from other copies (in possession of the families, or some parishes) but a lot of them are sadly lost forever.
