Photo Permissions

Question

I’m curious about photo permissions/copyright rules. I’m currently working through some 16 for 16 missions, one of which is to upload photos of headstones to WT  profiles. I’d read through the help page regarding photo permissions, but I’d just like to confirm that I understand correctly. As far as I can tell, headstone images from Find-a-Grave are not permissible. 

Does this mean that any headstone photos I see on WT profiles were taken by the person who uploaded them (not downloaded from Find-a-Grave or some other site)?

You are reading it correctly. You *can* however request permission, via the Findagrave memorial, from the original  photographer to allow permission to republish their photo on WikiTree. Add their information (date, name, permission info, etc.) to the comment on the image page.

Yes, it would be nice. I've seen photos I've taken uploaded here without permission.

For the 16 for 16 mission it can be photos of the person or a photo of their Headstone/Grave site.

There are two ways to get the photos.

1. Take them yourself (So you have the Copyright)
2. Get permission from the Copyright holder. That can be by personal correspondence or if the person who posted a photo elsewhere has expressed permission for it to be used by others. An example of this is Chester Bliss Bowles which if you see on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chester_Bowles_(Connecticut_Governor_and_Congressman).jpg it is in the public domain and is available for people to use. That permission (Whatever way you get it) needs to be recorded in the notes of the photo page when it is uploaded.
