The name Blackhead comes from outcropping on the coast first used for navigation and, then, to designate the settlement there that later became Blackhead and Broad Cove.

Newfoundland, itself,  became a British colony in 1583 and remained so until joining Canada in 1949.

In 1583, Newfoundland became England's first possession in North America and one of the earliest permanent English colonies in the New World.
