USBH Weekend Sprint: Help us clean up data doctor Suggestions

Welcome to US Black Heritage Project's weekend sprint!

Who can help? Everyone!

The weekend is over. Thanks for the help!

Goal: To work together to clear the Data Doctor suggestions for all USBH Project managed profiles and profiles with the {{African-American Sticker}}. Let's give 2024 a clean start!

Instructions:

  • Answer below that you would like to participate.
  • All of our USBH suggestions are on this one handy report.
  • Click on the number for that suggestion in the century column you wish to work on. This will bring up all of that suggestions for that century.
  • Because this list doesn't clear once you set the status, please declare in your answer below which suggestion number you will be working on to prevent us tripping over each other.
  • PLEASE SKIP THE PROFILE COMPLETENESS SUGGESTIONS. These are not high priority and require checking all sources for profile accuracy. If you're looking at the sources for a profile anyway, go ahead and clear these suggestions.
  • If you are new to data doctoring and clearing suggestions, please read this helpful page on which suggestions are the easiest and how to clear a suggestion. If you're not new to this work, the page has some helpful tips on priority suggestions.
  • Please remember that Suggestions are meant to help us reconcile information that might be incorrect and further research may lead us to the correct information. Please check listed sources and find more sources as needed to clear suggestions. Many suggestions will not lead to the need for changed information and should be marked false.
  • If you are new to working with USBH profiles, it is helpful to know that multiple name, location, and date variations are very common for us. In these cases, we do our best to look at as many documents as possible and make the best decision we can based on the most reliable sources. Please use research notes often to explain differences.
  • Please add USBH maintenance categories for things you don't have time to work on at that moment.
  • We will not be tracking individual scores, but you can keep track of your own contributions and comment on your post at the end of the weekend just for fun.

Before: 18,381

After: 17,692 (689 cleaned!)

After the weekend, feel free to come back to our suggestion report and keep on cleaning!

To find suggestions for profiles with the {{African-American Sticker}} that you manage/created or from a specific county or state:

For profiles you manage here, then replace my WikiTree ID (Melick-229) with yours in the search box on the left and click the blue "Get Profiles" Button. Then click on the suggestions link above your search results where it says something like "Found: 196 profiles for TemplateFull=African-American_Sticker Melick-229. Display results on WikiTree+ Map. Search for Suggestions on results." For profiles you created, do the same thing here.

For a state, follow the same process but use this search and replace Ohio with your chosen state.

For counties, you can do the same kind of process replacing Gallia County, Ohio with your chosen county/state in this search or this search. The first one will only give you profiles that are in a location category for the county, so if most of the county's profiles aren't categorized, you won't get many results. The second uses the birth/marriage/death fields, but you might get a lot of suggestions from other locations if the county name is something like Washington that is used in a lot of place names.

I'll be working on suggestions for profiles I've created. Since that is a lot of profiles, that's a lot of suggestions, and it will keep me very busy all weekendsmiley

Sure, I'll give it a try.

By the way, how can I run a data doctor report on my own profiles, and or the profiles of a specific county?

I'll have to give it a try!

Searching on WikiTree is for me, a skill level that is at best "Beginner." Whoohee!
Well! I tried your suggestion and I'm all set to clean up my mess!

Karen
Well I addressed 34 suggestions on my 179 African American profiles in Boyle County, KY.   And I wish to do better with my initial profile creation to avoid having to clean up messes. THEREFORE -- QUESTIONS!

* 8 false (like no married parents -- there were married parents)

* 16 fixes, usually just having started with a provisional DOB or DOD, and then missing the step of changing that to the found date and location for those events. NOTE TO SELF: remember!

* <ref> </ref> tags found after <reference/> When adding a new profile, it asks for a reference. I enter it using inline citation. It ends up below <references/>  I don't always remember to move it up. Is there anyway to just get it to be above the <references/> in the first place. OR do I just have to remember?

* 9 Find-A-Grave suggestions: I have a thing that may be a problem or not, feedback welcome. When I can't find a death record for an individual, or other vital stat, and I find the Find-A-Grave for a husband or child, I put that source in the Notes, or occasionally  in the bio (like her infant son died…)  Data doctor looks at those dates and comes up with a suggestion. Should I avoid putting in these notes? Is it "wrong" to put in a vital stat for a person's  family member, when that is either all there is, or important to their story?

Thanks,

I rather doubt I'll do any more of this weekend. My brain is full of fuzz.

Karen

Hi Karen. In answer to the question in your third bullet point, perhaps what you are looking for is the Advanced Option for Sources (text editing).

You can turn it on at the bottom of your Settings page.

For the last question, you need to add the parameter sameas=no to the template when the Find a Grave memorial does not relate to the person who is the subject of the profile. That will avoid the suggestion. See this Help page section.

Hi Karen, one thing to keep in mind is suggestions were created to help us go back and improve profiles. We don't expect perfection upon creation. It's okay to have a simple profile with info from just one source. That profile has now been created and is available for others to build upon too.

I have a ton of suggestions. A lot of them are false based on erroneous assumptions (ie: parents not married. Nope, they weren't married, therefore I did not attached as such and a note on their profiles says so)
Thanks! I've been typing <ref></ref> etc.

However it seems that the simple answer it that whatever you enter as a source for a new profile, WikiTree puts it below the </references> And you just have to remember to move it up.

Yes, <ref></ref> is only used for inline citations and has to go above the </references> tag to work.

Hey! I did that and it worked! Hooray! Life is easier.

Thanks,

Karen

I'll probably start with Error 965: Link error 404 Not Found, but there are plenty to go around if anyone else wants to work on them too.

Thanks so much, Christy! And thanks for the link to a report we can run.

I'll start with the profiles I created. Then if I have time, I'll start working on error 868 (inline citation after References tag).

I'll be working on these, although I tend to bounce around so I can't promise to stick to a specific error :D

Bounce away, Ambar! It will all end up squeaky clean in the endsmiley

I will start with profiles I have created.  Mom taught me to clean up after myself!
by Bartley McRorie G2G6 Pilot (168k points)

I'm pleased to announce that all suggestions for African-American stickered profiles in Alaska have been cleaned up!

(OK, so there were only 2 errors, but we can still say the whole State is done!)

Haha! That's awesome, Bart. laugh There's nothing like the feeling of finishing something!

Well, if you get bored with Alaska, there is always Kentucky - we have plenty to go around!

I'll work on Error 965: Link error 404 Not Found, too, starting somewhere in the middle. There are definitely plenty to go around!

Thanks, Rae! Those can be toughies. Appreciate the help with them.

I think I'm finished with all the 811s. We'll know for sure next week.
Yay! It's so great to clear out an entire suggestion!

I am a Data Doctor rookie (still in data med school?), so I'm going to work on one of the suggestions from the easy list, 723: Prefix in First Name.

by Kristen Stiefel G2G6 Mach 1 (10.6k points)
Thanks, Kristen! Most of those should be marked false since names like Prince, Queen, Captain, etc. are common with African Americans.
I lost power this weekend in the snowstorm that hit the Northeast, so I didn't get as many of these done as I was hoping, but I did clear a couple dozen. Looking forward to helping with more Data Doctoring in the future!

Thanks, Kristen. Our report will always be available. You can bookmark the linksmiley
