When you search and then get the Millerd (for example) surname list, you can modify the list. It will alphabetize by first name or put in profiles in date order - by birthdate or date of activity, or sort the list using other criteria.
When it is in date order you can scroll to the dates you are interested in, that probably meets your second idea.
