Does the national cemeteries keep list of all the POW camps and those who have died at these camps?

I'm not sure about what the National Cemeteries list.  The Shiloh National Cemetery does list all the soldiers buried there.  Here are links to the WikiTree US Civil War POW Camps Space pages that might help you.  American Civil War POW Camps

I worked on “D”s yesterday. I was so proud of myself for all the hard work. Then, last night I checked the scoreboard. I think I’ve done maybe five — and one, that I found on Find a Grave shouldn’t count, because after I finished researching him, I decided he wasn’t really there, and I should know better by now not to trust Find a Grave memorials without images.

Anyway, it’s good to see that there are others who are faster at this than I am.  There’s a good reason I end up on the Toddlin’ Tortoises team for all the ‘thons.
by Katrina Lawson G2G6 Mach 4 (49.3k points)

HI, your doing great, everyone has their own speed, and some of these guys do not have a lot of sources.  I've got guys who do have memorial Stones and I can't find any records except their memorial.   My trick is to write down all the soldiers I'm working on, then go and find what I can before I start making profiles, then I move faster through them, plus it helps me keep track of what I'm doing.  I tend to go off the track at times and need reminders of where I waslaugh

I ended up with the NPS site open in one tab, Find a Grave in another, the Category page in a third, and the Roll of Honor book open in a fourth. Then I could cross-check that they hadn't already been added -- and that they actually had a stone there.

I was bummed about that one, though. I'd found his grandfather on WT, so I was able to add his parents' profiles before I started him, so he was even connected. So that was three sources that didn't count, but still. He did die in the war and needed to be added. It's just that he still lies in an unmarked grave.

I suppose we shouldn't have a favorite profile, however;  my favorite profile in the Shiloh National Cemetery Category is Lt Colonel William K. M. Breckenridge, who served in the Mexican-American and Civil Wars. What can I add to make his profile prettier?

I visit his grave often and think he is buried in one of the most beautiful areas of the cemetery as it on top of the bluff overlooking the Tennessee River.

My 2nd great Grandfather, James Andrew James b. 1848 Alabama died during the Civil War and I have not be able to find anything on where he died or which battles he was part of. I have his widows' pension file giving the following information: He was a private in Massenberg's Battery South Carolina Light Artillery. He was killed on the battlefield in 1865 (does not state which). His wife was pregnant with my Great Grandfather who was born in Troup Co. Georgia on Nov. 18, 1865. I would love to be able to find where he died and what battles he fought in.
by Rosemary Kinney G2G6 (7.7k points)
I just realized I did a profile for his step-father, 1st Sgt. James L Bartee.  James James was living with him in the 1860 census in Chambers County, Alabama.

Still have not found a lead for James A James.

I was unable to find any real additional information, but I did update his WikiTree profile with what I could find: James A. James

It seems likely to me that, due to his age, it is fairly unlikely he was even officially enlisted. He was married at 16 (in 1864) and died at 16 or 17 (in 1865). His wife drew a pension decades later. She was most likely mistaken as to the state his unit was from... they were both from eastern Alabama, along the border with Georgia. He likely died at Mobile, AL, with Massenburg's Battery.

Matt thank you so much. I appreciate your help. I have to agree with you after years of researching. His widow Amanda Caroline never remarried.
Thank you Margaret I will check those and see if he shows up.
Rosemary,

When a soldier transfers from one unit to another, he is not always picked up in the records.  I was thinking maybe James first enrolled in another unit and then moved to the Massenburg's Artillery. That could be why he does not show on the roster of recruits for that unit.

With that in mind, I thought maybe James started with the 4th Reserves because his step-father was a Sergeant in Company H.  But I did not find James in the 4th Reserves roster.

I still like that idea and think it is worth searching other units formed around Chambers County. He may have enlisted into one of those and later moved to Massenburg's Artillery.
Thank you Norman, I did go back and look through some of the Artillery Units from Ala. I found one James, James in the Eufaula Light Artillery but it shows both a rank in and a rank out. If I am not mistaken rank out is not shown if they are KIA or MIA . They ended up in Mobile in Jan 1865.
Rosemary,

Rank out is usually shown if they are KIA.  On the general index cards for each soldier (what was used by the National Park Service to create their Civil War database, both rank in and out will be listed, if known, even on the KIA.
Thank you Norman, then this could possibly be him. Eufaula isn't that far from where they lived.
Rosemary

At least that is a lead you can follow. Alabama was not the best on record keeping. But then, they are not the worst either. So many Confederate records were destroyed near the end of the war to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Union forces. That makes it tough to track Confederate soldiers.

I'm sure you are anxious to break through the wall and find him.
Thank you Norman I appreciate your help.

Who needs some assistance with their letter? I will probably have some time tomorrow afternoon to help.

Thanks,

Margaret
by M. Meredith G2G6 Pilot (143k points)
Greetings Margaret, I apologize I missed this question.

Do you want to help on letter "M"?  I'm almost finished with page 2, so if you want to start on page 4 I will start on page 3 tonight.

Kimberly
Kimberly,

There are 8 pages of Ms that died in 1862.  Would you like for me to start from the back side and work towards you and Margaret?

I'm free and can help
Yes, I will start on page 4 of M. Thanks, Margaret
Greeting Norman & Margaret, yes & thank you....that means I will be able to get back to Andersonville sooner :)

Kimberly
Ok. I'll start at the back and work forward.  I would like to see the group get all of Shiloh finished this time.
Greetings Margaret,

It looks like you're working on page 3, so I will skip the rest of 3 and 4 and start on 5
So sorry; on my computer, Shiloh page 4 starts with Leonard McClain (different war, skipped), then Jacob McClellan, who was previously done, then W. W. McClure, who was my first M.

Page 3 on my computer starts with Pvt J. F. Mathews, whom I don't see in the Shiloh National Military category.
Margaret,

If you're free, you can help me with the letter N. I've started at the front. You could come in from the back.
As soon as I get home will get on it this afternoon.
Looks like the N's for 1862 are complete.
I don't think so.  Pam said the Ns needed work.  I've been doing the ones from the front. I'm up to JW Newman.
I started at the bottom and worked up until I met one’s already completed for 1862.
Yes there were a couple already done in there. I worked from the start up to Northrup where you left off. The Ns are now done.
Thank You. Appreciate you hard work on Shiloh. The category looks so good.

Could anyone use a hand with their letter. I am free and can help anywhere needed.
by Norman Jones G2G6 Pilot (113k points)
I could use some help with the "W"'s, it would be greatly appreciated.
Ok.  I'll work from the back side going forward
Dean,

I cannot find where to start. I find profiles you have created at the beginning of the Ws and at the end of the Ws.

Where do you want me to start working?
Dean,

I am working from the beginning headed back to meet up with you.

Greetings, happy to help anyone who needs assistance on their letter.

I heard Andersonville Prison calling so I will start back on that project unless someone needs help.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kimberly,

I am assisting Dean with the Ws.  I started at the front and I'm still in the Walkers.  Dean's somewhere in the back (not sure his pattern).  You could jump in at the Wi's. Work from the last Wi forward.  I will meet up with you somewhere in between. That way we can finish off the front part of the Ws.  Thanks.
Sounds like a plan.  Christian Whitmer is on p6 and he's already been added by someone else, I will just review him quickly and start working backwards.

Greetings and Happy Sunday everyone, if anyone needs help on their letter please let me know, otherwise I will start back on Andersonville. Kimberly
by Kimberly Morgan G2G6 Pilot (151k points)

It appears the goal of 1500 has been surpassed and stands currently at 1,585. Excellent job!

That's awesome!
Andrew,

Great news. With this much time left, we should be able to finish all the 1862 deaths in Shiloh National Cemtery.
error
I'm only seeing 1209 done on the tracker.  Where did the 1585 come from?

Over 1600 listed in the category https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Shiloh_National_Cemetery%2C_Shiloh%2C_Tennessee

On the main page of the challenge the goal next to the category was 1500.

Thanks, Andrew.

Does that mean we have done over 1600?  How does that chart relate to what we have done in this challenge?
A lot of people are buried at Shiloh National Cemetery that didn't die during the Civil War. As far as I know, it is still an active cemetery, so those burials are added to the category: Shiloh National Cemetery.

Does anyone else want some assistance? We have people available to lend a hand.

Greetings & welcome back Pam,  I hope you have a speedy recovery.
by Kimberly Morgan G2G6 Pilot (151k points)

Thank you, I tripped over a parking space cement block, got my elbow when i fell and hears the pop.  So i will need surgery.  Typing with one hand is slow work.  Thank you and the rest of the challenge group for stepping up and working together, you are the best. laugh  We will skip the October Challenge, so I can recover.

Oh Pam, ouch.  Hang in there and I have a feeling I can keep myself busy....Koda and Gracie are sending well wishes for a speedy recovery (my naughty pomeranians)
Hope you are able to receive surgery sooner rather than later and heal quickly. Typing with one hand is frustrating.
I'm having the surgery on the 27th
I hope surgery goes better than expected and here's to a speedy recovery.
