Can you help me find Mr. Gray? [closed]

I'm working on the son of Owen Russell Underwood, Gene Edward Underwood. Gene was married five times. His second wife was Julia Wynton Wilhelm. Julia was married five times. Her fourth husband was a man with the surname Gray. That is ALL that I know about him.

The only reason that I know she was married to him is because her social security files list one of her names as Julia Gray and her Florida Marriage Index file list her name as Julia Winton Gray.

I've tried a number of my tricks to find out anything at all about him, but I've come up empty. Not even a marriage record.

Why does Florida only list one name in their marriage indexes? That's nuts. I know that they married between Oct 1961 and Sept 1972. (The dates of her previous divorce and her last marriage.)

Maybe she didn't marry him in Florida (which would be unusual given all her previous and subsequent marriages and divorces.) But, with no given name, no birth date, and no location, this is tough.

I'm open to any ideas at all on how to crack this nut.

The fact that Florida lists the records separately for bride and groom is frustrating when they don't show the other parties' name, but at least one version of this record does show it as Wilhelm.  The problem is that we can't tell for sure if that is his given name or his last name.  I tried nosing around a little and came up as empty as you did.

If you're REALLY motivated, to the point of paying for it, perhaps you can purchase the record from Florida state records, but I suspect that there might not be any more on the record, although it's possible that the transcriber couldn't decipher the full name, so only included the part they could.  Of course, if you pay for the record then that will pass the problem of illegibility on to you.

I commiserate, but recommend that you have some chocolate to make you feel better and then move on to something else.

Chocolate. Yum....

Maybe the marriage wasn't in Florida?

A shot in the dark, but there's a Julia W. Gray of the right age in the Texas divorce index in 1971, divorcing a James C. Gray.

I think that is her. The age is right. The dates are right - both marriage and divorce. Thanks, Matthew. I'll plug that in and see what results I get.

Man I love me some Wikitree. Two heads are always better than one. Thank you so much.

This looks like it may be her marriage on 11 Feb 1972 with transcription errors in the detail. Hendry Co. FL is next to Lee Co. FL. I haven't looked for orig. film or checked Ancestry.

* '''Marriage''': "Florida Marriage Index, 1822-1875 and 1927-2001," citing Florida Department of Health, Jacksonville, Florida; and Jordan Dodd, Liahona Research, {{FamilySearch Record|VJQ6-XR9}}, Julia Winton Gray marriage to Wilhelm on 11 Feb 1972 in Hendry, Florida, United States.

That's her marriage to her last husband, Bernard Bruflat (even though the record says his name is her maiden name.)
