Is there anyway to stop the sticker listing the profile on ONS category

If I have a lower Category and later a ONS sticker is added I end up with 2 Category levels showing

IN edit (link to profile removed )

only one is listed as category and other as sticker

The added sticker also then adds the profile link to that category so the profile is now listed under 2 categories instead of just the lowest one.

I know the sticker can be edited to only use the lowest--but most do not. Too much work following this up when members do this.

Is there anyway to stop the sticker listing the profile??

Is this related to the Auto Bio?
Ian, I think it may be how ONS stickers are set up.  They auto-add a category for that study.  (I think.)
both yes and no

The auto bio does it but also if anyone adds the sticker not using the auto bio it also does the same unless you add a | etc for correct category which very few know how to do.
I suspect I am one of the few ONS that relies on so many categories. It really helps to find and avoid duplicates.
Does this happen also if the profile is living that adds the ONS sticker to their profile???
Note it only adds the sticker for Nisbet on auto bio not the alternative spellings  --  which I am happy for at the moment.
What if any is the benefit of it working like it does now?
As a complete novice using WikiTree, how more complicated can it get observing this conversation about categories and stickers. Keep it simple please when developing any new additions for users.
Is there or will there be a choice to use stickers on autobio.?
I just delete them if I can't see a point to it on the autobio. Some of the names that come up are very common and I'm sure people aren't going to research them all!

Hmmm...not sure that adding a parameter to the sticker's code actually works.  I just edited the Haywood Name Study sticker on my Dad's profile so that there was a |Cornwall in it - and it did not add the "Cornwall, Haywood Name Study" as a category - and, when I looked at the category itself, his profile was not in there.

Melanie is correct: that's the way the ONS sticker was created several years ago ie to auto-add the main category.
by Ros Haywood G2G Astronaut (2.0m points)

According to Template:One_Name_Study it should be possible to add a parameter to specify something other than the main category. However it looks like the format would need to be "|category=Cornwall, Haywood Name Study" rather than just "|Cornwall".

It works for my study but the problem then is if someone doesn't like stickers and removes  it you also loose the category which you don't want to do

One Name Study|name=Nisbet|Category=West Lothian, Nisbet Name Study

does work as I have tried it

Doesn't seem to add to category for living people

another issue is if you use the sticker with or without an extension (One Name Study|name=Nisbet|Category=West Lothian, Nisbet Name Study)  and someone doesn't like stickers. If they remove the sticker it also gets removed from the category--not how it should work and a problem!!!!

Ros, appears you added an unnamed parameter - which is why nothing happened. You have to use named parameters, as shown in the template examples.

Adding |category= will override the default addition of the <Name> Name Study category.

It works for my study but the problem then is if someone doesn't like stickers and removes  it you also loose the category which you don't want to do.

How often would that happen?

  • If you are working on a profile that you do not manage, and do not regularly contribute to, then a simple message with the PM should be satisfactory in order to add either the sticker or the category.
  • If you are a regular contributor to a profile, and someone removes it (who is not a regular contributor to the profile) just because they don't like it - that would be considered vandalism.
  • If you are the PM and another regular contributor removes the sticker, they should be discussing with you beforehand. Then you default to the category addition instead of the sticker.

How often something happens is that the benchmark on WikiTree?? Do you believe that if someone removes the sticker they also KNOW they are removing the category?? Is that vandalism or is it just not knowing?

If there are already more than 5 stickers I believe you are allowed to remove one that is not considered vandalism either and YOU WOULD also then UNKNOWING REMOVE  a category that is very useful to find merges and avoiding duplicates--when the sticker doesn't appear to be more than an image:

You currently use the following:

[[Category:West Lothian, Nisbet Name Study]]
{{One Name Study|name=Nisbet}}

Which results in two categories:

West Lothian, Nisbet Name Study
Nisbet Name Study

If you only want to display the  West Lothian, Nisbet Name Study category (and not add the high-level name study category) then remove the manual addition of the category, and change the sticker to:

{{One Name Study
|name=Jackson
|category=West Lothian, Nisbet Name Study
}}

I know that but it does nothing to help for what I see as the  issue of connecting stickers and category.

It will be an issue if people remove the sticker as it removes it from the location category which is extremely helpful for a ONS when you have hundreds of the same name. It is very helpful to try and avoid making duplicates and find them if that happens. I know as I use it all the time for that purpose.

Having ONS surname in location and other categories is also helpful to try and sell in using WikiTree. When I refer members from the Nisbet clan or Societies to the categories for their state and they see an impressive list with others from same location with same name it has gotten many to start using WikiTree.

It would be very helpful if one could once in a while resort the categories somehow after date as they do get difficult to check as they grow and not sorted better.
I use that as described by Steve and it works fine with my Geisinger ONS Study. Thus I only put stickers on profiles I created or adopted, on others I just put the category unless someone is asking for the sticker or places it himself.

Check the changes tab - a person added the category and sticker here: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Nisbet-2039&diff=178582475&oldid=178581947

Not sure what your point is! The profile is listed above to check. I asked Linda for about this and we were communicating and I gave her the Profile ID asked her to try it out so to be sure it wasn't only me. Is that not OK?? I have left it so I can use it as an example here. see original question above

If you look at the change list I have NOTED example use with a mispelled temporary.

23:00: You edited the Biography for Robert Nisbet (abt.1846-1907)(example use temprorary)

I read through this post and it seemed the question was if Autobio created the sticker with the categories.  I pointed out a person added the sticker, so it wasn't Autobio.

I didn't mean to upset you; my apologies.
it is always about the issue nothing personal.

No problem just didn't understand your comment, as autobio was not in my mind at all or mentioned in your comment and not part of my original question. I was not upset I just did not understand what you meant with the comment.

What if any is the benefit when it is working like it does now?
Can the ONS sticker just be a sticker?? Or is that how all stickers have to work?
A long list of common names not sub-grouped isn't really much help as far as I can see. Can it be changed if not really beneficial as is?

by Jean Skar G2G6 Mach 2 (27.3k points)
It is only 'not beneficial' to you.  It is very beneficial to other people (including me).
What is the benefit is what I want to know?
Why does both the sticker and category have to be in one to be beneficial for you?-- I can see it saves time if you want everything on one list.
But it does not take much extra time when you are first adding the sticker to a profile to also add the category if that is what you want??? Then we all can get the flexibility we want!
That the profile gets removed automatically from a category when a sticker is removed is that beneficial to you? Is there a way to please us all??
Please explain what you do to put people in the different categories and what you use your Haywood Study list for if it has all the profiles. Do you move them from there or do you list them twice? Maybe I just need some better ideas!!

This is taken from the category page of my Haywood Name Study (and it's on my other Name Studies as well).  The first two need subcategories (like Devon, Haywood Name Study).  The third one needs the main category (Haywood Name Study).

There are THREE ways to search the Haywood Name Study:

  • If you know the name and the country: search below for the country (in the subcategories)
  • If you know the name and the UK county or US state: search below for the county/state (in the subcategories)
  • If you know the name, but not where the person came from, scroll down further for profiles listed by name (People or Pages)

I've been using separate One Name Category & sticker entries:

[[Category:Lapham Name Study]] - above ==Biography==

{{One Name Study|name =Lapham}} for the sticker - below ==Biography==

see Lapham-624 for an example

thanks
You are very welcome.
That sticker creates an ONS category so the above the Biography header is unnecessary.

NO ONE has actually answered my question, as often is the case on G2G. Yes or No was all I actually wanted.

Is there anyway to stop the sticker listing the profile on the category??

If not at the moment is it possible to find a way with a bit of programming in the future if someone was willing to do it??

by Jean Skar G2G6 Mach 2 (27.3k points)

If the answer to both is NO then that is the end of the above question

If yes that is a new issue.

Hi Jean,

I am running a ONS on Blanchard. When I started, I had no idea how complicated they can be setup. My goal is following the migration of the last name.

I use Categories with the Country, U.S. State or Canadian Province above the Biography header and sometimes also a sticker below the Biography header.

I don't give Acadian women a Blanchard ONS sticker (just categories) if it is their married last name because they use their maiden names throughout their lifetimes.

Good luck,

Lisa

Agree --Complicated trying to understand what is happening was/is also my experience--you think you finally know how it works and something new pops up that you don't understand. I always though stickers and categories were completely separate for the ONS. Still haven't figured out HOW to know if a sticker is just a sticker or if it also has other functions.

If you check out the template page for each sticker, it tells you whether or not and how categories are added by the sticker. List of stickers. The ONS sticker template page.

Do ALL stickers have a template page??

Yes, they are all listed on the List of stickers, each one has a template page. There are 376 sticker pages.

If it's an ONS sticker (this profile is a part of the xxx Name Study) then it adds a category.  For the rest, check the list Margaret posted above.
THANKS LOADS I think I understand most of what is going on now.
if I add the following sticker does it add a category??

 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:England_Sticker

These help pages need to be simpler to understand I have no idea a lot of the time what they are trying to say

They need a very easy introduction in simple language  that children can understand.

 This sticker is for

It also adds category

It is only a sticker and does nothing else

Jean, if you look at the Examples on a sticker page that will tell you how the sticker is used. Looking at the examples on the England sticker page, they show how the sticker will display, using no county, or a county, or a county and place. There is no mention of categories being added.

In contrast, on the page for the ANZAC sticker, the examples show what category will be added by adding different parameters. clearly that one does add categories.

Looking at the examples (as well as the parameters) can help a lot to determine the way the sticker is used.
