There's a variant of the URL format that FamilySearch uses for linking directly to record images that the external link template currently doesn't account for. In the help example, the URL https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9BSH-9W9B is converted to {{FamilySearch Image|33S7-9BSH-9W9B}}. However, I have come across examples of a slightly different format:
Note that the ARK identifier contains a 3:2 instead of a 3:1. The template currently assumes that these links will contain a 3:1.
One idea to address this would be to add an optional parameter like this: {{FamilySearch Image|77JV-NZ4X|2}}. If the additional parameter is not specified, the default could be 1 which would account for all of the current uses. Just one idea and you may have a better one.
In researching this issue, I came across a very informative document: https://www.cni.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/John-Kunze-ARKs-cni-sp-20.pdf. It discusses Archival Resource Keys (i.e. ARKs) and includes a presentation from Family Search. See p. 50 of 52 where the options that FS expects to use is documented in a table. If I understand it, the options for digital images are 3:(1-4), so 3:1, 3:2, 3:3, and 3:4.
