PGM: Was Sarah Putnam the wife of John Hathorne (new research from ENEF)

A recently released NEHGS Early New England Families Project sketch on John Putnam identifies his daughter Sarah Putnam as "almost certainly" the wife of John Hathorne. I'm proposing that we merge Sarah (Divan) Hathorn into Sarah Putnam. (Ignore the Divan.  Before this new research, the plan was to change the LNAB to unknown).

The ID of Sarah Putnam is based on research by Jared James Nathan being prepared for publication.

  • Sarah was one of two Putnam children baptized in England for which there is no burial record.  The other, Elizabeth is definitively identified in New England by her admission to the Salem church in June 1643.
  • John Hathorne was admitted to the Salem Church October 1643, his presumed wife Sarah was admitted in May 1644 the same day as  the baptism of John, son of Brother Hathorne.
  • In the 1675 codicil to his will, Thomas Putnam refers to "my brother Hathornes share."
  • Also, the names Priscilla and Phebe appear in the Putnam/Gould families but are not previously seen among the Hathornes.

While there isn't any direct evidence the sketch says that the id is "almost certain."

If you have an NEHGS membership you can read the sketch here (see Commentary #1): https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/early-new-england-families-1641-1700/image?volumeId=63235&pageName=3&rId=0

Thanks in advance for weighing in on this proposal!

The page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Uncertain_Parents presents several options for dealing with uncertainty of this nature. After reading the ENEF analysis, I classify this as an instance where "There is one theory, but it's uncertain." Accordingly (and consistent with guidance on that page), I would be inclined to connect Sarah Putnam as the wife of John Hathorne, but discuss the relationship in the text as "uncertain." With luck, the to-be-published research will give greater confidence in the connection...
