How to format sources properly

Hello, I am new to WikiTree (a couple of weeks) but have many years experience with genealogy (mainly using Family Tree Maker software, Ancestry and FindMyPast).

On WikiTree I have been able to add in line citations by placing the information and [web link] between <ref>...</ref> as instructed on the site.

This gives me super scripted numbers (e.g. [1]) in the Biography and shows the source in the references, which is fine. However, I have a problem. In the reference list under 'Sources', the hyperlink appears numbered in square brackets (e.g. [1]) rather than showing the actual web source. For example, in the Souces I get 'Description of the souce I added [1]' with the hyperlink in the [1] rather than for example in 'FindmyPast' as intended.

Apologies if I have not explained my problem clearly, I am happy to elaborate.

I would be very grateful if you could let me know what I am doing wrong. Hopefully just a small error.

Thank you,

David

Hi David. Welcome to G2G.

Instead of [http:hyperlink] try

[http:hyperlink Find My Past]

or something more elaborate as the "anchor". See this Help page section.

Thank you!

David:

Try using a space after the hyperlink and then the title of the site as well. Here is an example for using square brackets in the Sources section.

 [https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1910USCenIndex&indiv=try&h=136014503 US Census, 1910]

The site is in square brackets at the beginning. This creates the link. Then there is a space, then there is the title of the site, then there is the closing square bracket.

If you would like to number your sources, use inline sources. Add <ref>  </ref>  to the beginning and end of your citation and place the citation above the Sources section. You need to make sure that the citation is above  <references/>   to make this work.

There are three ways hyperlinks can be included in the citation:

[https://www.findmypast.co.uk/] will display as [1]

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/ will display as https://www.findmypast.co.uk/

[https://www.findmypast.co.uk/ FindMyPast] will display as FindMyPast
