I'm looking at Scotland's People and see a William Rob marrying Jean Meldrum in 1798 in Fife (actually see two records for the same date, one in Kinghorn Parish 493 ref 40/193 and the other in Abbotshall Parish 399 ref 30/325) and then a William Robb marrying a Jean Meldrum on November 5, 1810 in Gobals and on November 11, 1810 in Dumbarton (actually see two records for the same month - one in Gobals Parish 511 ref 644/2 and Jean is marked with FR619 and the other in Dumbarton Parish 496 ref 40/259).  How likely are these two couples are the same partners?  I'm thinking they are two different couples.

Hi Bruce. The information I obtained came from another person's tree. I am not certain of the validity of the record. I am looking into it now but am unable to view the actual records. I see three children (David, Agness, and Jean) in Scotland's People attributed to William Rob and Jean Meldrum between 1799-1804 in Abbotshall and then another child to William Robb (note the second b) with Jean Meldrum in Dumbarton in 1811. I would like to investigate further before we make the change but I will be happy to if I can't find definite sources this week. Thanks, George

Could records in two parishes be explained if one of the spouses originated in one parish and the second spouse in the other parish? The marriage may have been held in one parish but recorded in the other as well. If so, there could have been one marriage in 1798 and another in 1810.

However, it does not seem likely that the same couple was involved in both. Why would they marry each other again after 12 years? The names William Rob(b) and Jean Meldrum are not unusual. In early nineteenth-century terms, it's a fairly long way from Fife to Dumbarton or the Gorbals.
