Jayne,

I found several John Hales but have no idea whether they are your John Hale.

A good place to start is to more thoroughly develop the profile of your John Hale himself. It is currently unsourced and has very little information. In fact, only a wife's first name and a death date and place with no sources listed; and a claim that he and his wife were first cousins with no explanation for why this is believed. A son is named, as well as multiple grandchildren with not one source for any of the info. (At last count I clicked on a trail of twenty profiles and found not one source to support any of the info included in them.)

I have found that looking deeper into the info I have on my family- names, places, dates, etc. and finding and documenting sources to confirm them is always the best first place to start. Otherwise, I am just chasing my tail!

In the 1990s, I once searched for over a month for a parent of a man who, I later discovered, did not actually exist. Had I focused instead on first proving his existence and learning what I could about him, I would have known that and not wasted my time looking for another generation!

Abundant clues can often be found when we first focus on fully developing the story of one of our ancestors before looking for their ancestors.

Perhaps you have already done this but just not placed the info on the WikiTree profile.  It would certainly help others to help you if the profiles included all the info that you have, and sources for that info. Currently, we have multiple generations of people, without a single source to support their existence, let alone their connection to each other. "Family records" are not actually sources or proof of existence.

At the risk of seeming unhelpful to you (but in reality, I believe I am giving you the best possible advice,) develop the profiles you already have; add sources and flesh out their stories as best you can with proof before looking for another generation.

You may want to review this help page and its linked pages to get started:

Good luck and please let me know if you need any assistance.

Edited to add: as an example of the kind of info that can be added from a single source, I updated the profile of Stephen Marion Hale: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hale-12156  with the information gleaned from the 1850 census and placed an appropriate inline citation. Another example is  Forest Hale (1882-1956) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hale-12372  with info from his death record.

I have found so many John Hales! And Mary Hales!  I have three Hale lines so far, and several of them married Bournes. Bournes and Hales married many times through the generations.

Going back to the importance of Family Records which were handed down to me in 1970, I have been able to find most of my family. My Great Aunt Dollie Neal Hale, who had the Family records before me, show me the names of John Hale and Mary Hail and told me they were cousins so I wouldn't be confused. And there is a note in our family records with that info, along with their marriage date of 17 Aug 1793 in Wythe Co, Va. My family took extra care of this couple and thank goodness they did.  B.F. Nuckols in his book Pioneer Settlers of Grayson Co, VA said that John and Mary were cousins. And after I've done the research, I can plainly see they were cousins. So to me, this fatc is settled.

My cousins and I are also researching Hale in early Virginia. Look for deeds and probate files which can often give you clues to family connections.

Thanks. I have the info on Lewis Hale and Mary Burwell and always believed they were the parents of Mary Hale, but I see others stating they are the parents of John Hale,  so I wanted an opinion on this. John Hale married his cousin Mary Hale, so can get confusing real fast. I now believe I was right. Lewis Hale and Mary Burwell were the parents of Mary. I know only that John Hale's father was John Hale. Thank you!

But dates for John Hale 3rd are 1770-1818;

Sources: Family Search and the Will of John Hale which was probated in 1818 right after he died. In this will he named his wife and kids.
