Of course you can add him.  You just can't put a marriage date in, and the system will unfortunately still call you spouses.

Quite right, Ros. In fact it's reasonable for Jill to put in a date indicating when the partnership or relationship commenced. See this authoritative answer from Jamie Nelson on 24 September 2022:

If they considered themselves as spouses, you can still add them as married even if there wasn't a formal ceremony. Just make sure to explain things in the biography.

I think it should be mentioned here that if you click on the 'Add' menu at top right of the page, and then on 'New Person', you'll get a screen that lets you add a new person that is not related to you, and that need not be connected to anybody else.  But if the person is a living non-member, then under the privacy rules, the profile will be Unlisted, and nobody will be able to see it.  If your boyfriend were willing to join the site and create his own account, then he would manage his own profile, but it would be visible, and you could choose either to show yourselves as spouses or just link to each other's profile with an explanation in the Biographies.  Depends on what you want.
Relationships of living people do not show except to the profile manager/s.
