Hi Margaret. Welcome to G2G! Here is a death notice that gives some clues, if you haven't seen it already:

<ref>Family Notices (1917, November 19). ''The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)'', p. 6. Retrieved October 24, 2022, from National Library of Australia Trove [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15735927?searchTerm=Dunscombe 15735927]. Direct link.

Caroline his wife was also on the tombstone. d-1917

When was she born and what was her maiden name?

findagrave ID 243180204
They married in Newtown in Sydney in 1886. At that point her name was Caroline Dretier (not necessarily her name at birth).

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] marriage registration number 3098/1886. Edward B Dunscombe; Caroline Dretier; district Newtown. Accessed 24 October 2022.</ref>
She seems to have died in Enmore or Newtown in 1933, aged 82, so she was probably born about 1851. If this is the right person, her father was Christian Dretier.

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] death registration number 8119/1933. Name: Caroline Dunscombe; father: Christian; 82 Yrs Enmore Newtown; district: Newtown. Accessed 24 October 2022.</ref>
Edward and Caroline had at least three children: Lydia (1887–1883), Mary (1888–?), and Thomas (1890–1893).

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] birth registration number 8777/1887. Name: Lydia C Dunscombe; father: Edward B; mother: Caroline; district: Newtown. Accessed 24 October 2022.</ref>

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] birth registration number 9274/1888. Name: Mary C Dunscombe; father: Edward B; mother: Caroline; district: Newtown. Accessed 24 October 2022.</ref>

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] birth registration number 25287/1890. Name: Thomas D Dunscombe; father: Edward B; mother: Caroline; district: Newtown. Accessed 24 October 2022.</ref>

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] death registration number 10773/1893. Name: Lydia C Dunscombe; father: Edward B; mother: Caroline; district: Newtown. Accessed 25 October 2022.</ref>

<ref>[https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages] death registration number 15055/1893. Name: Thomas Dunscombe; father: Edward; mother: Caroline; district: Waterloo. Accessed 25 October 2022.</ref>

This death notice for Caroline confirms that she died in 1933, not 1917. The Find a Grave memorial for her erroneously uses the date of death of her husband.

<ref>Family Notices (1933, April 3). ''The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)'', p. 8. Retrieved October 25, 2022, from National Library of Australia Trove [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16956316?searchTerm=Dunscombe 16956316]. "DUNSCOMBE.—April 1, 1933, at the residence of her daughter, 22 Charles-street, Enmore, Caroline Dunscombe, relict of the late Captain B. Dunscombe, late of U S Navy, beloved mother of Mary Millar and grandmother of Eddie, Frank and Joyce, aged 82 years."</ref>

Yes, you are right once findagrave undates what I sent I will change her death date.

Hi again Margaret. I wonder if this record is for a sister of Edward?

<ref>"Ireland Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," database,  {{FamilySearch Record|FY9R-QZ3}} (10 March 2018), MARRIAGES entry for Elizabeth Batchelor Dunscombe; citing Dublin South, 1866, vol. 2, p. 778, General Registry, Custom House, Dublin; FHL microfilm 101,250. Volume Number: 2. Accessed 25 October 2022.</ref>

The mentions of New York City and the US Navy above suggest he spent time in the USA. That's not an area I have experience researching. To attract the attention of people who do, you could edit your original question and in the Surnames/Tags field add the tag

new_york

(typed exactly like that, with one underscore separating the words, and no space characters). You could also add further information you may have about Edward as a comment on your question.

Yes, Elizabeth is on the familysearch.org tree that I sent to

Margaret. She was born b-1832-1922 Mount Desert Ireland

New South Wales Death Registration #14737/1917 was registered at Newtown, but that is simply the government office.  Enmore and Newtown are neighbouring suburbs in inner southern Sydney, New South Wales.  Parents were listed as Charles W and Maria.
