Hello,
I would be very grateful for the help of a Latin expert in translating the following gravestone inscription (photo of gravestone below).
I don't know if I have managed to correctly read it or not. Some of the letters are hard to decipher.
QUEM STATIM SECUTA EST BRIDGETTA EIUSDEM DUM VIXERUM ANIMD CONIUX CHARISSIMA EODEM NUNC SUB MARMORE EADEM SPE RESTAT OBIIT VIII DIE MARTII AN DNI 1655
What I have managed to roughly translate (with online help) is:
'...and immediately after Bridget, her dearest husband while he was still alive, now remains under the marble and the same hope died on March 8 year of our Lord 1655
I'm sure this is incorrect. I'm pretty sure that not just the `'anno domini' has been shortened, but several other words as well, which muddles things up.
The grave is from St Mary the Virgin, Astley, Warwickshire, England.
Here's the original photo.
If anyone can help me, you might be instrumental in clearing up a century-long mystery! Many thanks in advance!
