Did James Shelton 1580-1668 really exist?

James Shelton has been claimed a son of Sir Ralph Shelton, this has been convincingly refuted. It is claimed he settled first in Jamestown about 1610 having arrived with Lord De La Warr [Delaware]. This has not been proven. In fact, no sources have yet been found confirming this person ever existed.

Can anyone find sources or documentation? Should he be declared a non-existent person?

Any help or comments welcome.

Thank you for pointing out the Jstor article. I hadn't seen it before. However, Whitaker uses the same sources in the article that she used in her book. They still do not support her statements. The Find A Grave memorial for Sir Ralph Shelton is interesting but does not give any sources for his purported son James who supposedly came to the Virginia Colony.
