You have a point, John. You no doubt know this already, but for general information, Wikipedia says that Trewartha means "Upper farm/homestead" and Andrewartha means "The upper farm/homestead", by addition of Cornish definite article "an" which mutates the "t" into a "d".

I hope someone can explain how the related surnames are determined, as you ask. Perhaps it is phonetic, which would explain the lack of linkage, since Trewartha and Andrewartha do not sound the same.
