Do you mean able to be seen, or able to be edited?
Assume BOTH.

I assume nothing.  cheeky

then BOTH!
Able to be seen for the purpose of utilising the great genealogical minds here.

Pros of accessible profiles:

  • allows for collaboration with other members
  • reduces the possibility of duplicate profiles being created
  • other members can view/edit the profiles depending on privacy level
  • members of the Data Doctors Project can correct any errors on the profiles

Cons of accessible profiles:

  • other members can view/edit the profiles depending on privacy level

Cons of non-accessible profiles:

  • reduces the collaboration process with other members
  • increase the possibility of duplicate profiles being created
  • others can't view/edit the profiles depending on privacy level
  • members of the Data Doctors Project cannot correct any errors on the profiles

Tommy, I want to expand on one point.  Collaboration works both ways.  When you provide information to others, you may be helping them with their own research.  Just as useful, you allow them to help you.  I've had people contact me out of the blue with very useful information about my own ancestors, and that would never have happened if I'd hidden my tree.

All profiles for people born over 150 years ago or who died over 100 years ago must be Open, so you don't have the option not to make them accessible to everyone. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Privacy. More recent profiles, frankly, are probably not going to be of much interest to anybody but you and your close relatives, so others probably won't bother looking at them or editing them even if you make them Open.
