Happy holidays to all! Here’s some recent news from the Germany Project:

  • Since our last newsletter in September, we’ve added a new Project Leader, Dieter Lewerenz, and a new PC, Jelena Eckstädt. Dieter will oversee all translation-related requests and continue expanding the project’s vast location history pages. He’ll do all that while continuing to help WikiTree members on G2G and providing research for the weekly WikiTree Challenges. Jelena will work with Dieter as PC for the Translation Team and she will also be coordinating our Profile Improvement Teams and helping on G2G (we get a LOT of G2G requests!). Jelena also has plans for some fun project-wide challenges … stay tuned! Thank you Dieter and Jelena for stepping up to these leadership posts. We appreciate you!

  • Do you speak German fluently? Many of our members do. Our Translation Team could use your help as they will soon be starting to translate WikiTree categories. If you’re interested in joining, please post a comment on the Translation Team page or contact Dieter or Jelena directly.

  • Our Profile Improvement Teams still need your help! We need the help of Sourcerers, Connectors, Data Doctors and Arborists to improve German profiles. If you can commit to a small amount of time to work on a few profiles each week (or each month), we’d really appreciate your help. For those of you who enjoy writing detailed biographies using inline citations, we’d love to have you join our Managed Profiles Team. If you’d like to join one of the Profile Improvement teams, post a comment on the team page you’re interested in and we’ll get you signed up.

  • The Germany Project Resources page has been updated and expanded and replaces our “Reliable Sources” page, which was outdated. Please let me know if you have any other useful resources to share on this page, or just go ahead and add them yourself. Remember, this page includes German resources that are NOT region-specific. If you're looking for regional resources, please see the resources section of the corresponding Regional Team page. For example, see: the Baden-Württemberg Team or the Volga German Team.

  • Please consider joining the Germany Genies for WikiTree’s January Connect-a-Thon happening Friday-Monday, January 14-17. More info is available on the team page. Registration is now open HERE. During the October Source-a-thon, the 9-member Genies sourced 792 profiles, coming in 19th place overall (out of 28 Teams). Go Genies!

  • Speaking of the German Genies: check out our new team logo, created by Marcia Benjamin. I love the WikiTree coming out of the bottle! Thanks Marcia! image

  • Germany Project check-ins are finally complete. Thanks to all who responded promptly! Remember the only membership requirements for the Germany Project are (1) to respond to bi-annual check-ins and (2) to improve at least one German profile every 6 months.

  • We’re still waiting on the German Roots Sticker changes - I will post when that work has been completed.

  • Did you know that you can request images from a film/DGS from The Family History Library (FamilySearch) through their Record Lookup Service? Many German records are on unindexed films at FamilySearch and this service might be helpful to some (certain restrictions apply). Thank you to Kerry Larson for this info! See his full response in his G2G answer HERE.

  • Dieter posted the following News from Archion: Nov 20, Oct 26 and Sep 3. Thanks Dieter!

If you’re not already a Germany Project member, please join us! To join the project, you need to: (1) have been a WikiTree member for 90 days, (2) have made 100+ contributions, and (3) have an interest and appreciation of all things German. Answer our JOIN POST and we’ll get back to you.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season to all!! Dankeschön für das Lesen!

Both my husband and I have German ancestry. I joined the Germany project out of curiosity and it became my home on Wikitree. Our fierce leaders are amazing! Always welcoming, kind and tremendously helpful! I love our community!

Thank you all for what you do on German ancestry research and helping members decipher German records. The maternal side of my family originates in 'early' Germany. I continue to research that branch to see if I can find the start of those ancestors. It is quite fascinating!
