Is Oakwood Cemetery at 95 Potts Road in Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada the same as this cemetery category which already exists on WikiTree?

Existing cemetery category on WikiTree:

  • [[Category:Oakwood Cemetery, Haldimand-Norfolk Regional Municipality, Ontario]]

In short, yes.

However, Haldimand and Norfolk are separate counties and are not currently amalgamated.

Further, the cemetery is within the town of Simcoe, so the category should read [[Category: Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe, Ontario]], and be nested under Norfolk County.

But ... on the Category: Simcoe, Ontario page it says that ... In 2001, Simcoe and all other municipalities within the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk were dissolved and the region was divided into two single tier municipalities with city-status but called counties. Simcoe now forms Ward 5 of Norfolk County.

I am now in Quagmireville.

The profile of the person in which I am trying to categorize with a cemetery category died in 2003.  Supposedly, Simcoe no longer existed at this point in time.

What should the proper category name be?

I assure you Simcoe still exists, I was just there last week wink

The town of Simcoe is in Norfolk County. Norfolk County and Haldimand County were briefly amalgamated as part of the Great Provincial Amalgamation of 2000, but are not any longer. They do share a Public Health Unit.

I also note that under the Category you mentioned there are people listed who died in Simcoe COUNTY, which is a completely different region than Simcoe, Norfolk County.

See Simcoe, Ontario, vs. Simcoe County, Ontario.

I'm just going to jump in here and see if I can help sort this out for you Tommy.  Today, Simcoe is part of Category:Norfolk,_Ontario  The community of Simcoe is not the same as the County of Simcoe, as Christine explained above.

Therefore, I would recommend renaming the Cemetery category to [[Category:Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario]]  This will provide differentiation between the community of Simcoe, and the County of the same name.

Amy … please edit the category name to what you indicated above, I have no objections.

Already done.  Glad you caught that.  Thanks!
There is a lot of confusion on some records and how they have been indexed on several sites.

Simcoe County is often misindexed as Simcoe the town or vice versa. They are about 250 km apart, another reason for having the county name on locations.
