Dictionary of Welsh Biography (hard copy 1959) lookup needed, please.

Happy Saturday everyone.

If someone has access to a hard copy of the 1959 Dictionary of Welsh Biography, I would like to know precisely what the footnote on p. 288 says regarding John Lloyd ap David Lloyd.

The online version of the Dictionary doesn't give original page numbers, and I have been unable to find the reference I'm looking for by searching.

Thank you.

I have a hard copy of the Dictionary. Page 288 has entries for two Griffith families.

I can find no reference to John Lloyd ap David Lloyd.

The Ancestry tree would seem to indicate a misunderstanding of Welsh patronymics and most genealogy software systems seem unable to copy with these.

Thank you. Just to double check, there was no mention of the Lloyds in the footnotes?

Is one of them GRIFFITH family, of Cefn Amwlch, Penllech, Llŷn?

The footnotes refer of course to sources and there is no reference to the name Lloyd or variations there.
Yes the entry to the Griffith family is as you indicate and extends from the whole of the right hand side of page 288 to the whole of the left hand side of page 289.

Thank you Stephen. I now understand the reference which says something to the effect that he is supposedly  descended from the Griffiths of Cefn Amwlch, Penllech, Llŷn. So, the text only shows us who they are, but not how John's connected.

That's been very helpful and totally answered my question. Welcome to Wikitree.

Don't know if this will help but it is suppose to be online, perhaps this will help.

Hi Anne,

I also searched through the online version of DWB and couldn’t find anything.

I’m perturbed though that although his name in the biography is John Lloyd ap David Lloyd (i.e. John Lloyd son of David Lloyd), John’s father as linked in Wikitree is named Evan Lloyd.

Since the only source for Evan Lloyd is an Ancestry tree, he is almost certainly incorrect, but I don’t have access to the sources to confirm that.

Further to my previous postings, the full articles are available in the on-line version of the Welsh DNB including the footnotes.

After doing a name search select the specific individual required from the list on the left hand side.(It may be necessary to scroll down to find the one wanted)
