war cemeteries overseas?

There are several war cemeteries overseas, and I am wondering if we should link them with the VA Cemeteries page, under their own heading...  I just connected the Manila one into the Oceana Cemeteries page, but there are several in France as well.  I guess my question is, will it help?  If I know someone's name, I can just look for the person.  But maybe if someone is looking for family members they know died oversease, but don't know where, it might help?

I think that including the overseas cemeteries is an awesome idea.  It is important to recognize the sacrifices as well as it could possibly help people find the correct location of their ancestor (so family can visit sites).

Susan,

A fair number of the cemeteries are already set up.

Category: VA National Cemeteries  should only be used for those that are actually VA National Cemeteries.  A list is shown linked from the category page.

Category: American Battle Monuments Commission  is responsible for overseas cemeteries - a list is shown at this category page as well.

If you are referring to

Category: Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Fort Bonifacio, Manila

This category has been set up - is it possible there is now a duplcate?

If you have a cemetery that is not part of either of these two groups, please post on G2G with the proifle ID and I'll be happy to see if I can determine where it should go.

Yes

Duplicate

Category: Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines

Looks like the one I have is more correctly labeled, as Manila is not a country.

Maybe inside the VA Cemetery page there should be a link to the American Battle Monuments?

Susan.

Excellent idea to add a note on the VA page - I will do that and also from the Battle monuments to the VA page.  Find these can be difficult - any other idea to make it easier would be much appreciated.

What about this one?

[[Category: Dunkirk Town Cemetery, Dunkirk, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France]]

It is for Britsh Forces.

I have had Canadian Forces as well

Can we some how umbrella them?

Susan,

In the US we have a clear naming convention for cemeteries - Cemetery Name, City, State.

Unfortunately that conventon does not work for all locations - this means that a judgement must be made and a somewhat arbitary decision made on the name.  For everyones convenience it seems best to follow the names set up unless there is a serious error in the name.

As  Category: Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines  has been set up please use it.

For other cemeteries it is necessary to carefully research each one and determine which government organization is responsible - only then can a proper category be assigned.

Category: Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for the Dunkirk Town Cemetery.  The cemetery is a subcategory of the CWGC. I have added the needed information.

That is the one I created as a duplicate....the other one was already there....I just couldn't find it....I wonder if we can create a page with just cemeteries in it....so we can more easily find the one we want....I wish there was a better way of looking for cemeteries.  Maybe we can make a .doc sorted by country and searchable?  just ruminating.  When I make a new cemetery and link it to the next category up, I go up one level and try to make sure I don't duplicate, but since this was overseas, i wasn't sure how to do it...I think I know now.  I put the Phillipines in Oceana, though, and then had to move it to southeast Asia.

As for Dunkirk, is there an umbrella category for Veterans Cemeteries, and then possibly by nationality of burials?

Thanks!

Susan,

It can be very frustrating when first looking for categories.  Using the special search for categories on the bottom of each profile page does help and often will identify the needed category.

All cemeteries are under the Category: Cemeteries  I have added ABMC and Commonwealth to this page - I suspect that a very large percentage of veterans burials for the US and Commonwealth Countres will be in one of these.

Trying to create a single list is probably not going to work - I think there are over 20,000 cemeteries under the Commonwealth listing alone, only a couple of have been entered.

If you can review the category page and see if you have any additional suggestions to make it easier to find a cemetery please let me know.  I used your idea for the link between VA and ABMC - that may help.

Please look at the my prior note on Dunkirk.  Also I have edited the Dunkirk category page.

Where is the category search?  I use the find at the top right, but it is clunky.  Wish it were like a google search.
Susan,

On the very bottom of all profile pages - in the dark green section is the line

ABOUT WIKITREE   |   BLOG   |   HELP   |   G2G FORUM   |   SEARCH

Click on SEARCH

Again - go to the bottom  - above the green -

search for a category
Thanks! That should help a lot.
