Son of Cristobal I Cabeza de Vaca y de Vera and Isabel Sanchez.  Born in Seville, Spain. Husband of Mayor Diaz.  Father of Juan de Vaca and Maria de Vaca.  Grandson of Pedro de Vera e Hinojosa and Teresa Cabeza de Vaca y Zurita from Jerez de Frontera, Al-Andalus, Espana. I believe that there is some confusion about this family due to the extreme habit of naming sons after fathers/grandfathers.  There are two Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vacas.  The first was married to Teresa Vasquez de Miera (Meyra) and he was a Capitan in 1407, possibly his Great great-grandfather.  I have traced him as father of Fernan Ruiz Cabeza de Vaca (three of them) who married Beatriz Gonzalez de Medina. Alvar was the grandtather of Pedro Fernandez Cabeza de Vaca who married Catalina de Zurita y Suarez Moscoso, who were the parents of Teresa Cabeza de Vaca y Zurita. Teresa married Pedro de Vera e Hinojosa as noted above.  They were also the parents of the second Alvar Nunez who was the explorer and governor of Paraguay.

He couldn't have died in 1659.  However, is it possible that he could have died in 1569?  Maybe the digits were transposed?
