New Extension: WikiTree Toolkit [closed]

I have been working on a small set of tools that have been suggested in G2G, but are not yet supported on the WikiTree site.

I would like to introduce a new Chrome Extension: WikiTree Toolkit.

Based on requests for an easy way to copy the profile ID to the clipboard as suggested by Billy Dunn here, and by Kenneth Nellis here, the extension creates a small button in the header next to the Search Person form. This button (updated for v2.0) allows you to select from two options as shown below:

  • Copying the Profile ID (e.g., Harris-5439)
  • Copying a formatted Internal Link (e.g., [[Harris-5439|Steve Harris]])

Based on a suggestion from Jillaine to be able to preview inline citations, I have now added references mouseover support.

If you have any ideas for extending the toolkit, or find any bugs, please let me know!

I just updated the Toolkit. I saw the new Toolkit Search Options box at the bottom.  That works great!  Thank you.

I was going to say that I can't find the options to Copy the ID from non-Edit mode or Edit mode, but I found them.  There is no coloring to them and they are down in the Biography area, as seen on the Help page, but it was moved from where it was, so it took a bit to find it.  If those links were Bold, they might be easier to see, but once we figure out, it will work.

Thank you Steveyes

v2.1 pending release:

Bug fix for date parsing, added user option to move categories to top of profile, added LNAB and CLN search options

Thanks for the update, Steve.

Were you aware that if you use the copy Wiki-ID on the edit page for a profile what results when you paste is like this...

Edit Profile of Elias Malachi Dees

...and not the Wiki-ID?

@Nelda, That was also fixed in v2.1
Good. I just need to update my extension, then. (Note to self...it ain't automatic...you must update.)

Edit...worked great after I installed update. Thanks!
Steve,

My extension is updated because the copy ID part is corrected, but it took me a bit to realize how to Set the Category options, which works nicely!! Have to select the Chrome Extensions, Detail for this Toolkit Extension, then Extension Options to turn it on and Save it.

How do we see the LNAB  and CLN Search options?

LNAB and CLN options are on hover. For example, you hover on FamilySearch and should see two options:

Thanks Steve

Version 2.4 was just published. Details can be found at: Space:WikiTree Toolkit.

Please make sure your extension has updated, or update in the Chrome Store as needed.

The extension can also be applied to Microsoft Edge. I did that and I love it! Chrome and I are having issues.

Steve, thank you so much for the printer friendly option. That's one that I have wanted for a long time. Do you have a place that you are taking suggestions for that one since it is still in Beta?

You can leave a comment on the WikiTree Toolkit page.

I'm very new to all this  - have recently started learning how to format stuff in WikiTree profiles - am doing my first Orphan profile. I wrote this question to my Orphan Profile Mentor (Pam Moen) and she suggested I write it here.

I'm not sure if this question has already been asked, although I've read all the comments above - I'm new to the formatting language etc - but here goes.

You know the great little Wikipedia gadget by which you can hover over a linked word and a little box drops down in which there's a snippet of information that you can quickly skim over?

Is there any way that this, or something like it can be incorporated into the body of a WikiTree biography text?

Thanks everyone for your patience with this newbie. :)

Hi Frances, is it possible to share a link or screenshot of the feature on Wikipedia you are referencing?
I don't know how. I've seen screenshots on G2G before, but haven't a clue how to attach one here. I'll send you a private e-mail with it attached.

Steve, I'm having trouble with the new version of this app. In its previous life as the Wiki ID Copier it displayed the button and options just as you show above in your post. After installing this new version, I no longer have the button. Instead, it is displaying the two options just below the menu bar:

Is there something I should do to fix the display?

The two options next to the Profile Vitals is the new location. There were requests to make the copying of the ID easier (one-click instead of two) and to minimize the appearance on profiles. This is more in line with the original request so this was rolled out in the latest version.
OK thanks, just wanted to make sure there wasn't a weird problem. Thanks for these enhancements!
