Chalmers of Gadgirth

Hi, looking for advice.

I am connected to the Chalmers of Gadgirth through my Boyds of Trochrig.  However I can't find the family represented at all here on Wikitree.

While I have a range of sources the main one I was planning on using was

"History of the County of Ayr" by James Patterson in 1847.

Would this be counted as a reliable source? If so I will go ahead and use it as the bones of the Chalmers branch of my tree adding other records from Scotlands People and the NRS etc as I go.

thanks in advance for your advice

Hi Kerry,

I've found Patterson's history to be fairly accurate, but as with all sources like this it's best to try to find a corroborating source as well.

I note that the Chalmers of Gadgirth are mentioned in Balfour Paul's Scots Peerage. You may want to use that as well when you're working through the lineage.

There is an easy link to all the volumes here on Wikipedia, and this is a link directly to the index page for the Chalmers of Gadgirth. (Be patient for it to load, as I've added a search link so that Gadgirth will be apparent on these dense pages.)

Since the family is concentrated in Ayrshire, you might find additional ideas for sources on our Ayrshire page, though if you're using Patterson, you're probably aware of most of them already.

Hope this is helpful.

Many thanks for this Bobbie,

It will take some time merging all my sources but now I can do it with some confidence it will be good to get a start.

thanks again

Kerry
