Biography

David Francis was born in 1812. He was the son of Johannes Young and Maria Schnare. Francis married Amelia Pennell at St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, NS, on Aug 27 1833.

"Young, Francis David (Frank or Francis)-(1812- 1878) - He was born at First Peninsula on August 12, 1812 and baptised at the Zion Lutheran Church on August 17, 1812. On July 27, 1833 and at St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg his marriage to Amelia Elizabeth (Hannah?) Pennell was recorded , No. 204, page 68. She was the daughter of Thomas and Salome Pennell. Witnesses were Thomas A. McGregor and John A. Ernst. David Francis worked as a ship carpenter probably at the shipyard of his brother Hibbert on the south side of Montague Street, opposite the former building of Powers Brothers. Sometime in the early 1840s he and his family moved to Dartmouth where he was employed as foreman of the well known Lyle shipyards. Later he purchased the yard and operated it with his sons, building, finishing and repairing vessels (Trider, 2003). Francis passed away June 7, 1879 at age 67. His wife passed away December 1, 1894 at the age of 81 years." (Potter, R.R.)
