John W. Young was born about 1838[1]-1841[2][3] in Columbia[4] or Lancaster[5] in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania[2][1][3][6][7]. He was the child[2][8] of Mary and George Young, the husband[1][8] of Hester, the husband[8] (maybe)[9] of Sarah, and the husband[3][6][7] of Martha Ann Jacobs. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 27 March 1863 in Columbia, Pennsylvania. He was discharged on 10 July 1865 from Beaufort, South Carolina.[10]

He was born and raised in the same town as and lifelong friends with 54th Massachusetts comrades George Thomas Prosser and Sylvester Burrell, Co. D.[12]

Was he a Reverend before the civil war during or after. What type of faith? This is what caught my attention did he minister to those in his regiment? Interesting

After. See occupations :) AFAIK, he did not minister during the war. They had at least one chaplain who mustered into the role: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:54th_Massachusetts_Volunteer_Infantry
