Richard Butler was born about 1839[1]-1846[2] in Franklin County[3], Pennsylvania[4]. He was the (presumed) child[2] of Jane. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 24 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 25 March 1863 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]

Death

He passed away in 1895[6] and is buried at Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[7]
