Biography

Thomas Wright was born in Lancashire, England.

Thomas was born in 1849. He was the son of Thomas Wright and Ellen (Myler) Wright.^[1]

In 1851 the family were living in the Islington area of Liverpool and his father worked as a mechanic. ^[2] They then moved to Manchester before 1855 where younger brother John and sister Emily were born. When Emily was baptised in 1857 his father's occupation was a (House) Painter, but his father died in early 1861 and in the census his mother and other siblings were living in Chapel Place, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. He was now 12 years old and working as a Doffer in a Cotton Mill. ^[3] By 1871 Thomas was a lodger, age 21, with Joseph Royal and family, at 21 Booth Street, Hulme, Manchester, and was working as a House Painter. ^[4]

On 30 September 1871 Thomas married Fanny Barlow. Thomas was now 22 and still living at Booth Street and Fanny was 21, has no occupation and was living at 11 Hill Street, Hulme. Her father was named as Richard Barlow, a Watch Maker. ^{[5] [6]}

27 Sept 1886 Thomas is named as father to Walter Arthur and William Henry who were then admitted to the Ardwick Industrial School. He was then living at 17 Billington Street, Clarenden Road, Oxford Street, Manchester. See image.

From at least 1889, Thomas and Frances and the younger children spent periods of time in Withington Workhouse, Manchester. Mostly it was Frances and the younger children, but on at least 8 occasions between 1889 ^[7] and 1895. ^[8]Thomas was there aswell. By this time their two oldest sons Frederick and Thomas James were likely old enough to work and look after themselves, and their next two sons William Henry and Walter Arthur were in the Ardwick Green Industrial School. The younger children Mary Ellen, Alfred and Herbert were the ones who were with them for these periods. The reasons are not known. It may have been due to illness, and Frances and Thomas have already been described as 'drunken' in the Admission Record for William and Walter into the Industrial School.

Research Notes Thomas and Frances had seven children. They also spent several periods in the Workhouse both separately and together. The last period I have found was from 28 January 1895 and 16 February 1895. His son Frederick married on 6 June 1895 and Thomas was recorded as deceased, so he died sometime in this period. I have not found a death record which quite fits unless it was registered in Prestwich. ^[9]
