I was born & grew up in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada where my Dad's immediate family was based. My Mom was from Milton, Nova Scotia and we visited our Hatt grandparents there frequently.
My Dad was born in Scotland but grew up in Canada. His father was born in Canada, the son of Scottish immigrants. My grandfather Hatt's ancestors migrated from Hemmental Switzerland to Nova Scotia in the 1750's. Many of my Hatt ancestors married descendants of German & Swiss immigrants to Nova Scotia also in the 1750's. My grandmother Hatt's heritage is mainly English. I also have English ancestors via my great-grandmother on the Wilson side of the family. I'm fascinated that my DNA analysis correctly identifies this mixed heritage. But it includes some unidentified small contributions from Irish, Danish, and Norwegian origins as well. Long before I knew of my Hatt family origins a German work colleague once told me that I'd make a good German. Must be something in it. Perhaps also from the Anglo-Saxon English connections.
I have 7 siblings all living in Nova Scotia.
I went to University in Ontario, where I met and married my wife Marilyn who was also born in Nova Scotia, but grew up in Ontario. We moved to Australia "for a year or two" in 1979, and ended up staying here. We have four daughters all born & raised in Australia, now all married with children of their own. Seven grandchildren so far.
We made many trips back to Canada over the years so our kids would know their Canadian relatives. This worked well and they are now personally connected to many of them. I'm keen to document our family tree, so we all have a better understanding of who we are and where we've come from, and to facilitate re-connecting with some long lost cousins.
I was educated in mechanical and computer engineering and worked most of my career in software based machine control and design systems. Now retired and enjoying other interests, genealogy being a newly acquired one.
