Biography
- Living in Amsterdam since 1974, I was born in 1956 in Emmeloord. This is a so called new town in the middle of this 1942 made Noord Oost Polder, it lacked history.
- I love history and the underlying research. In 2012 I published the Bellamy Atlas[1] about my own neighborhood, which was originally outside the city limits and was used for gardens and country houses from the 15th century on. With this research my knowledge of the archive world has expanded enormously.
- Most of my ancestors are Frisian, only before 1800 some of them come from the nearby provinces Groningen, Drente, Overijssel. The first known 'foreigner' is Bartholomeus Dopkewits [2]who came ca. 1649 to the University of Franeker in Friesland. The oldest known ancestor within Wikitree is Syts Buchodr.van Hemricksein (1463-1509) [3].
- As the Frisian culture is one of oral history, I remember a lot of family stories I heard as a small child, visting birthday parties and funerals in Friesland. Some stories have hidden clues, which I try to reconstruct by genealogical research.
- Did I hear a tone of jealousy in my mothers statement that her family in law imagined that they had some noble ancestors - who did they think they were? As all my family pedigrees were pedigrees composed by males, searching for their oldest known male ancestor, I decided to start seaking for all the female ones. My mother turned out to be a descendant of very prominent Frisian families. And also of an ancestor, who got very impoverished due to forced sale of all his capital farms. A result of his excessive drinking.... a story her first cousin told at her funeral in 2018. A story that was surrounded by shame. So now I know why there are no female silver objects in the family to be inherited by daughters from their mothers....

We zijn heel blij om te zien dat je nog steeds actief bent op WikiTree en dat je ook bezig bent met Nederlandse Profielen. We zouden graag met elkaar een nieuwe impuls willen geven aan het Dutch Roots Project om Nederlanders binnen WikiTree beter op de kaart te zetten. Het Dutch Roots Project heeft al meer dan 50.000 profielen onder beheer en in totaal zijn er al meer dan 500.000 Nederlandse profielen op WikiTree Binnen dit project houden we ons bezig met het bewaken van de kwaliteit van deze Nederlandse profielen en anderen te helpen daarmee. We zouden naast deze taken ook andere zaken willen oppakken, maar hiervoor hebben we meer vrijwilligers nodig. Daarom deze vragen aan jou:
1) Heb je interesse om mee te helpen als vrijwilliger bij het Dutch Roots Project? 2) Zo ja, gaat je voorkeur uit naar een specifieke taak binnen het Dutch Roots Project? (denk bijvoorbeeld aan vertalen, sourcen etc of iets anders dat je zou willen aanpakken.)

We hebben je deze keer echt nodig! Als je tijd hebt, help dan alsjeblieft.
WT organiseert dit jaar wekelijkse challenges onder de naam: “Year of Accuracy” We hebben er al veel aan gewerkt maar volgende week wordt een bijzondere.
Of je het nu leuk vindt of niet, we hebben deze week jouw hulp nodig om te laten zien waartoe wij als DRP in staat zijn - vanaf woensdag 9 juni en het is gedurende een week erna, start waarschijnlijk laat voor ons Nederlanders (na middernacht) - de uitdaging is om bakstenen muren neer te halen voor de Nederlandse genealoog Yvette Hoitink.
Ze deed geweldig onderzoek naar haar familie. Deze uitdaging gaat over laten zien dat het beter kan!
We hebben natuurlijk al DRP-leden die meedoen aan de challenge, maar de meeste deelnemers zijn Amerikanen. Ze hebben hulp nodig bij vertalingen, het vinden van betrouwbare bronnen, Nederlandse naamgevingsconventies (omdat we vóór 1811 in profielen zullen duiken en waarschijnlijk patroniemen moeten gebruiken en nooit tussennamen) en het toevoegen van biografieën. We zijn er zeker van dat buitenlanders hulp nodig hebben. En leer veel door deze uitdaging, maar ze hebben wat hulp van ons nodig.
Alsjeblieft, je hulp wordt zeer op prijs gesteld.

WT is organizing weekly challenges this year under the name: “Year of Accuracy” We worked on many before but next week will be special.
If you like it or not, we need your help this week just to show what we as DRP are capable of - starting on Wednesday the 9th of June and it is during a week after, starts probably late for us Dutch (after midnight) - the challenge is to bring down brick walls for Dutch genealogist Yvette Hoitink.
She did great research on her family. This challenge is about showing we can do better!
We have, of course, already DRP members joining the challenge, but most participants are Americans. They will need help on translations, finding reliable sources, Dutch Naming Conventions (as we will dive into profiles before 1811 and probably need to use patronymics and never use Middle Names) and adding biographies. We are sure foreigners need help. And learn lots because of this challenge but they need some help from us.

Ek is op soek na die voorouers van my oupa, Hendrik Eduard Smit-3280 (06 Mar 1901 - 27 Apr 1967)
Hy was getroud met Jacomina Wilhelmina Christina Wagenaar-301 (10 Mei 1908 - 22 Mar 1991)
Hulle het in Kirkwood (Albany Distrik) Ooskaap, ZA gewoon en o.a. geboer vir John Randall en die Stahmer/Stamer/Stammer gesin. Na die 2e Wêreldoorlog het hulle grond gekry in blok 1 L 10 op die Vaalharts besproeiingskema (Noordkaap) en het hulle in Okt 1946 met hul 5 kinders daarheen getrek. (6e kind is daar gebore).
Hy is blykbaar nie dieselfde as Hendrik Eduard Smit-191 gebore Calitzdorp 09 Aug 1898 nie.

749 - Het gebruik van een patroniem in de naam is overbodig indien een echte achternaam al in gebruik is. Als in de officiele documenten toch een patroniem gebruikt wordt dan behoort het tot de voornamen. Geen patroniem in doopinschrijving of geboorteakte? Dan is er geen enkele aanleiding om het toch in de naam op te nemen. Het ontgaat mij daarom bijvoorbeeld waarom jouw grootvader Wytze als naam hier Wytze Andries heeft terwijl hij in geboorteakte en huwelijksakte uitsuitend Wytze wordt genoemd, en bovendien op zijn profiel direct te zien is dat zijn vader Andries heette. Kortom, mijns inziens in het algemeen een methodiek die overbodig is en inconsekwent wordt toegepast.

En jiehaa de Scan-aThon is begonnen en...voor het geval je dit nog niet gezien hebt ...er is iets gewijzigd..we hoeven geen tracker te gebruiken zoals we gewend waren tijdens eerdere Thons...betekent...je kunt een foto/scan/akte uploaden en gewoon doorgaan met de volgende, zonder eerst datgene wat je gedaan hebt te vermelden in de tracker, alle bijdragen worden nu automatisch bijgehouden !
