Life in Norway

Lars Danielsen Nielsen was born on September 22, 1865 in Bergen, Norway. [1] His parents were Martin Johan Nielsen and Gertrude Margaretha Danielsen. [1] He was baptized on November 26, 1865 in Korskirken. [1] The witnesses were Thea[?] Dahl, [?] Dahl, [?], [?] Eriksen, and [?]. [1] He was the youngest of 13 children.

The 1865 Norwegian census was taken on December 31, 1865. Lars appeared in the census in Bergen with his parents (Martin and Gertrud), all 10 of his living siblings (Anton, Theodor, Johan, Rasmus, Martin, Frantz, Dorthea, Gertrud, Elisabeth and Marie), and two servants (Marthe Andersdatter and Gertrud Andersdatter). Lars appeared in the 1875 Norwegian census in Bergen. [3] His middle name was incorrectly given as Jacob. [3] He is living with his parents (Martin and Gjertrude), his brother Theodore and his wife, 7 of his other siblings (Johan T., Rasmus, Gjertrude, Dorothea K., Elisabeth B. H., Martin Johan and Marie F.), and a servant (Marthe Andersen). [3]

Lars was confirmed on October 3, 1880 in Nykirken. [4]

On March 18, 1887 Lars left Bergen on the Stjerne Linie [Star Line]. [5] This probably refers to the White Star Line. The transcription says he was "Amerik Borger" [an American citizen] [5], but this is unlikely.

The S/S Domino left Bergen on March 19, 1887 for Hull, England. [6] There are a few possible ships that may have taken Lars from England to America. [6] The White Star Line's S/S Germanic left from Liverpool, England, and arrived in New York, United States on April 2, 1887. [6] The White Star Line's S/S Adriatic left from Liverpool and arrived in New York on April 8, 1887. [6] The White Star Line's S/S Arabic left from Liverpool and arrived in New York on April 12, 1887. [6] The White Star Line's S/S Britannic left from Liverpool and arrived in New York on April 15, 1887. [6]
