Biography

Rose Ella Mizer was born on June 2, 1875[1] in Missouri. She was the daughter of John Mizer and Rebecca Burrows. She was their 6th child and daughter of 14 children.[2] At age 5 she was in her parents home in Dayton, Newton, Missouri, along with five of her siblings.[3]
She married John Walter Atkins on August 16, 1891,[2] in Seneca, Missouri.[4] They had seven children six children living on 1910 Census.

John made charcoal for a living, but they later purchased a farm at Baxter Springs, Kansas. In 1900 they were living in Joplin, Jasper co., Missouri with their first 3 children, Linder F-t, Walter R-3, and Rosalie age 1, where John was a Miner of Zinc and Lead.[5] in 1906 John and Rose and their 6 children accompanied, Elijah Mizer and his children, and Mary Mizer, Atkins and her children on a trip to Beaver county Oklahoma where they homesteaded. An early winter snowstorm caught them before they were able to build their home but they found a building which contained a stove. they lived in this building until they moved into their dugout.[2] In 1910 they were living in Spring Valley, Cherokee, Kansas where John was farming, and they had Lander-15, Walter-13, Rosalee-11 Ruth E-8, Bethal-5, and Johny-4 years old in the home. they had lost one child. [6] In 1920 they were on a Farm in Peoria, Ottawa, Oklahoma, where at this time Rosa lee-21, Bethal-15, and jay age 13 were the only children in the home.[7] They were still in Peoria in 1930, with jay-21 as the only child left in the home.[8]
Their final move was Galena, Kansas where they lived the rest of their lives. [2] Her husband John W. passed away in 1940 at the age of 76. They had been married 49 years.
As a widow, Rose was living in Galena, Kansas in April of 1940.[9]
Rose Ella died April 7, 1957 [2] in Galena. at the age of 82, and was buried in Baxter Springs, Cherokee Co., Kansas, in the Pleasant View Cemetery.[1]
