Biography

Elijah Henniger "Lige" Mizer was born on March 3, 1870,[1] in Lebanon, Missouri,[2] He was the son of John Mizer and Rebecca Burrows. Elija was recorded as 2/12 (2 months) old on the 1870 US Census.[2]
He married Lucinda Emmaline “Tennie” Goforth on January 27, 1891, in Newton, Missouri.[3] They had six children during their marriage. They divorced in 1906.[4]
Following his seperation to Tennie, he took the children, and accompanied with two of his sisters and their families they moved to “No man’s Land” of Oklahoma. They left with 3 covered wagons 6 horses and traveled to Beaver County (Now Cimarron Co.,) Oklahoma in the Panhandle where they homesteaded. The trip took 24 days. They left on Sep 16, 1906 and arrived at their homestead site Oct 10, 1906. Elija homesteaded the S. W. Quarter. Section 29, Range 3, Township 6.[4]
The family lived in dug-out homes for about five years. These were very hard years. There were times when snakes would come into their dug-outs: they picked up cowchips for fuel to heat the home. And hauled things from Texhoma for others, to help with the family income. Their daughter, Bonnie, recalls that one of her fond memories was the time father brought home molasses and they sold it to people who brought their own containers which were empty lard cans. They dipped it out with ladles.[4]
He died on September 2, 1915, in Newton, Missouri, at the age of 45, and was buried there in the Hornet Cemetery.[1]
