Herbert Robert Mitchell was born on 13 March 1917. He was the son of William Mitchell and Edith Patterson.
He served in the New Zealand Air Force during WWII as a Flight Sergeant in the Royal Air Force, No. 603 Squadron. Service No. WWII 391843. He served in the 1940 Battle of Britain and the Pacific Theatre of War.He was killed in action 12 Mary 1942, in Takali, Malta.
Before enlisting he worked as a Stonemason.
