Biography

This profile is part of the Meszecsov Name Study.

Stojanus Meszecsov was married to Anastasia Tyurcsov. In 1852 they were farmers (agricola) living in Omor (currently: Roviniţa Mare, Timis, Romania), where in November their son Nicolaus was born.[1] In October 1854 his brother Ladislaus followed.[2] Godparents in both cases were innkeeper/merchant (caupo) Nicolaus Szemerak and Eva Lenhardt.

In January 1868 his wife Anastasia Tyurcsov died of Typhus. They were still living in Omor.[3]

Research notes

Name

This person is recorded with different names. The birth record of Nicolaus from 1852[1] refers to him as Stojanus Meszecsov, where it is clearly visible, that this record was modified later and originally contained the name Mircsov. At the birth record of Ladislaus,[2] only two years later in 1854, his name is Stanislaus Mircsov. Since house number and wife are identical, one can still be quite sure, that this is still the same person.

When Nicolaus gets married in February 1876, the groom is the son of "Stanislai Meszecsof"[4] same goes for the wedding of Ladislaus some months later.[5] At Anastasia's death in 1868, he is mentioned with this name as well.[3]

The name Mircsov might be a mistake by the priest Jónás Georgius from Omor. This is perfectly understandable, since there were a lot of people with typical Banat Bulgarian surnames like Mircsov in Omor and its branch Berestye (Banat Bulgarian: Brešća, currently: Breștea, Timis, Romania) at the time. It is remarkable, that on the backside of a letter confirming the baptism of his stepson Pal in 1867, the priest consciously wrote "Baptismales Paulis Mircsov Mesecsov Augustinov".[6]

Death

There is a death record in the deaths book of the parish Detta, dated 31 March 1880, about the death of Stojan Mesecsov in Denta. He is said to have died of weakness/illness of age (debilitas senilis) with an age of 66, so his calculated year of birth would be around 1814. His origin is stated as Óbesenyő (currently: Dudestii Veche, Timis, Romania),[7] from which also the around 110 Roman Catholic Banat Bulgarian families originated, that founded nearby Berestye in 1842.[8]

He was married to a Susanna Sebastianov,[7] which would be generally possible, with Anastasia Tyurcsov's death in January 1868.[3]

Second marriage

Unfortunately there is no marriage recorded for Stojanus/Stanislaus Meszecsov and a Susanna Sebastianov between 1868 and 1880 in the marriage books of Omor, which would definetely connect the death record of this Stojanus to the husband of Anastasia Tyurcsov and the father of Nikolaus and Ladislaus. There is also no other marriage record for him before his death.

There is, however, a marriage of a Sebastianus Meszecsov, son of Paulus Meszcsov and Agatha Decsov, with a Raphaela Sebastianov that occured in May 1869, a bit more than a year after Anastasia's death.[9] There are some implications that point towards the theory that Raphaela was actually Susanna Hajlamas/Sebastianov. This would fit with the name of Stojanus' wife in his death record, but would add a third first name to the collection.

Origin

According to his death record,[7] Stojanus/Stanislaus was born around 1814 in Óbesenyő (currently: Dudestii Veche, Timis, Romania). The problem is, that the alphabetical index of baptisms for this place starting at 1800 doesn't contain any Meszecsov at all and no Stojan/Stanislaus/Sebastian M. whose year of birth would somehow still be considered acceptable. Using the calculated birth year of 1821 from the mysterious wedding record would not make any difference.

When looking at the Hungarian tax census from 1828 for Torontal and Temes county[10] the author only found one person bearing a form of the name: in the list for the village of Udvarnok at position 48 there is an Antonius Metsisov.[11] Even if these lists only contain taxpayers owning a certain amount of property, it is remarkable, that Ladislaus, the son of Stojan/Stanislaus married Raphaela Augustinov whose origin is stated as exactly this village.[5]

In the church books of the parish Katalinfalva (currently: Ravni Topolovac, Serbia), to which Udvarnak belonged, there are deaths of a Joannes Sebastianov († 1850)[12] and a Petrus Meszecsov († 1836),[13] both originating from Óbesenyő. There are also deaths of people like Mathias Mesecsov († 1832)[14] and Magdalena married Mesecsov († 1831),[15] who are reported to be from Écska (currently: Ečka, Serbia).

In Écska there is a birth of a Sebastianus being the son of Pauli Meszetsov and his wife Agatha (leg. conj). He was born 31 August 1816 and his godparents were Joanne Haylemasz (sic!) and Maria ....[16] These parents probably match Paulus Meszetsov and Agatha Decso, who got married in Óbesenyő on 19 November 1815 wittnessed by Nicolaus Krankulov and Sebastianus Hailamas (sic!).[17] This pretty much sounds like the later husband of the widow of Raphael Bobjcsov, who might have also been the husband of Anastasia Tyurcsov and the father to Nicolaus and Ladislaus.

  • get proper latin translation for parents occupation
  • so far checked marriages and deaths in Katalinfalva, but births remain
  • Was Stanislaus Decsov, witness to the second wedding of Stojan's son Nicolaus Meszecsov, maybe a relative that would help strengthening these theories?

The claim of Sebastianus and Stojanus being the same person is backed up by an analysis of the source data for the online family book about Detta, the parish Stojan died in. The author of the book told he that she has at least ten people in her database who are referred to both as Sebastian and Stojan in different records. One example would be the man with the surname Uzun who was married to a Maria Sofran.[18] At the birth of his daughter Julianna in 1879[19] he is referred to as Sebastianus, while at all other known occasions, including the one of the previous child Maria[20] and the one of the next child Wilhelmina,[21] he is recorded as Stojan - each time with the same wife.

An 1884 marriage record for the parish of Boka, which included the Banat Bulgarian settlement Kanak, even states the groom as "Sebastianus Stanislaus /Stojan/ Mravjiov filius Mathiae + † Annae ..." from Óbesenyő.[22]

Residence

According to the Omor birth records of his sons Nicolaus (1852) and Ladislaus (1854) the family lived in house #35.[1][2]

The death record of his wife Anastasia in 1868 suddenly has them at Omor 0.[3] Same goes for the wedding of Ladislaus in 1876.[5]

When Sebastian Meszecsov marries Raphaela Sebastianov in 1869, they both have this address.[9]

Same goes for Stojan's stepson Paulus, who got married with this address in 1867 and 1868 and probably also had three children born there between 1875 and 1878. When he died in November 1878 his address is stated as Omor–.[23]

When Stojanus Meszescov died in 1880, he was living in Denta #10.[7]
