Biography

Catharina married Joannes Schelb from Matthislehof on 10 May 1802. He was 28, she was 20. Witnesses were mayor ("Reichsgräflich Sickinger Vogt") Andreas Schweizer as well as youngling and farmhand Joseph Riesterer.[1] They had at least six children.[2][3]

She passed away in 1810 from a lung disease (Lungensucht) after laying in bed for about eight weeks. She left three children behind.[4][5]

Research notes

Her death record declares her birthday as 10 August 1785,[5] which would make her a daughter of Johann Hug, blacksmith in Steig (currently: Breitnau), and Getrud Jäggle/Jäckle.[6] The inventory of people living in the parish of Hinterzarten on 11 December 1809, has her and her parents at the upper smithy in Steig. In parallel there's a Catharina Hug living with her husband Joannes Schelb at Matthislehof, which leads to the conclusion that those are two different people and that the death record is wrong.[7]

The marriage record with Johann Schelb attributes Catharina as Hugentochter in der Zarten aged 20 years.[1] Hugentochter might express "daughter from Hugenhof", which is pretty close to the center of the actual Hinterzarten village ("Zarten"), as opposed to the smithy in Steig, and also a lot closer to Matthislehof. In fact, Anton Hug and Francisca Heizmann, who were running Hugenhof back then, had a daughter named Catharina born/baptized on 26 September 1783.[8] At the time of the wedding in May 1802, she would have been exactly 20 years old and can be considered the right person. Godparents at the baptism were Agatha Steiert and Jacobus Schelb.[8] The latter is probably identical to the later father-in-law of Catharina by the same name.
